They wrote this song to tell the world they re _NO_ nazis...
And, by the way: The title is "Links 2 3 4", not simply "Links"...

jhinka u r totaly right about that thing with man. GJ.
neway rammstein brought this song out to smash the rumours that they are nazi and to show the people that they were more left than right.
In the soviet union that did heeps a parades with all sort of designs and stuff and in north korea they still do it. Rammstein allso come from the DDR so they have had plenty of communist influence in the past but they are also not communist.
neway its not important cuz their music kicks

DrMurphy, I found your "history lesson" to be a valuable addition to understanding Rammstein's lyrics. It's nice to have someone who shares in the same history and culture give the rest of us a deeper insight to an artist's influences.

The previous translations all had a little flaw; I will give the total and correct translation:
Can men break hearts?
Can hearts speak?
Can men torture hearts?
Can men steal hearts?
You want to put my heart at the right place.
Still I will decline that request.
Then you go left.
Left 2 3 4.
Can hearts sing?
Can a heart jump?
Can hearts be pure?
Can a heart be of stone?
You want to put my heart at the right place.
Still I will decline that request.
Then you go left.
Left 2 3 4
Can men question hearts?
To bear a child born under it?
Can men afford,
To think with their heart?
You want to put my heart at the right place.
Still I will decline that request.
Still the heart beats in the left breast.
The tailor did bad work.
Links 2 3 4
Still, most of the english people among you wont get what the text exactly means, this is because of the context, German is a total diffrent language then English is.
For myself, I am dutch, and I have a talent for languages so I pretty much understand it all.
an example of the context:
Sie wollen mein Herz am rechten Fleck
Doch seh ich dann nach unten weg
in Dutch this would be:
Jullie willen mijn hart of de goede plek
Toch zie ik daarvan af
This has a far better context than the English language will ever be able to translate that so accuratly.

I Love This Song!
It's just the best, and the video is the best music video I've ever seen.
Why can't you guys just get that this is a song, you don't have to know the exact translation.
I know German and I know what the song says and I love the song!

Tim Heusschen:
One comment I would like to make, on your translation of "man" as "men". In my, admittedly limited, knowledge of German, isn't "man" the word for "one" as in, "One can do this, one cannot permit the vagrancies of the world to overcome one"? That sort of posh way of saying "I" or "You". "Mann" on the other hand, is "man" in English, or sometimes "husband" (mein Mann).
I would appreciate it if you could tell me whether I have been misled in my understanding of this aspect of German speech.

dont run it through a translator and call it a translation the translator does it word for word and doesnt take in account for grammar so you get the words mixed up and sometimes get the wrong meaning.although i give you props for trying cause it does give us a good idea of what it means you can still get confused as hell trying to read them

Hell ya man, that Dr. Murphy has it pretty good. But watch the video... you see the ants marching in those designs (which kicks ass) I find it odd because, the Nazis were highly known for their marche designs. Now I LOVE Rammstein, hell I have all their parafnailia and I am NOT calling them Nazis, just adding an observation to things.

Some hystoric background to the german word "left":
Until 1848 Germany didn't realy exist. There just where a lot of more or less small princedoms, like a carpet of patches.
1848 the 1st German Empire was build and the 1st German Parlament was formed at the Paulskirche (St.Paul Church) in Frankfurt/Main. Every political trend was represented there. The socialists and communists where sitting at the left side, the nationalist and fascists at the right side. the middle was formed by democrats and conservatives.
Till this day "left" represents the socialistic political way, the "rights" are the fascists.
Note: "right" doesn't mean "correct". This are two different words in german ("rechts" and "richtig", both in english the word "right")
The sentence "Das Herz schlägt links" (The heard beats left) is from the more or less famous german politician Oskar Lafontaine (its a french name) from the Socialdemocratic Party Germany (SPD) and means, the natural human life has to be social, the heard is at the left side in your body.
So what this song wants to tell us ?
Be social (the heard beats left) !
And can your heard resists every attac from the right ?
The army style "left, two , three, four" points to small national moves in our country.
Greez from cold but sunny Germany. And vote against war !

Look at this translation. sounds better doesnt it?
Left 2,3,4
Can men break hearts?
Can hearts speak?
Can men torture hearts?
Can men steal hearts?
You want my heart on the right side...
well see how its going now:
Then it beats left, left 2,3,4
Can hearts sing?
Can a heart change mind?
Can a heart be pure?
Can a heart be of stone?
You want my heart on the right side...
well see how its going now:
Then it beats left, left 2,3,4
Can men ask hearts,
To bear a child be born under it
Do people mind,
when they think with their heart?
You want my heart on the right side...
well see how its going now:
Now it beats on the left,
The fear could'nt have wanted it worse
Left, left 2,3,4
