Rofl at Stormrider393...you're a tool for posting such a comment about this band. Oh but don't go listening to Tool either or I'll have to find where u live and punch u in the throat! :) Toodles -oh and this is a great song. Rage and Soundgarden for the win. Ya think Chris kinda had the majority of influence in naming this band with Soundgarden and Audioslave --Sound and Audio-- ...I personally think Gardenslave would have been a better name. Slave against the machine, OoOOoooOhhh heres 1 for ya Audio Machine or even Machine Garden ...ROFL all awesome names pshh what were they thinking.

Actually.. it seemed a lot more like he is torn at the loss of happiness from a love that did not happen.
So for salvation he looks in the bible for happiness beyond death because he can't find it here on earth (at least not like he pictures it would have been with the love lost).
It's fairly fitting... I've been there... get there sometimes still, but the happiness is there you just have to avoid looking at life like a line of tasks and more like a series of events to share with others.
The difference between heaven and hell is regretting the loss of those events with time... or loving their existence.
Watch Jacobs Ladder and ignore the bizzare stuff and get to the meat of the subject.

I was listening to this song recently and it made me remember this whole thing on here. This is what I have decided: this song is about those who live their lives atheists (or just don't practise their religion, whatever that may be) and who, facing death, suddenly become afraid and repent, praying for salvation and relief from eternal damnation. Like a lot of Chris' lyrics, it's not exactly a comment on religion itself, but those who practise it. In this, he's saying that belief in any particular religion is driven by fear. The same message is found in the song "Burden In My Hand" After all, "fear is strong"...

I don't know what caused me to do it, but I just read all of the comments. I thik this song is definately about someone who is about to die. There are clear allusions to Christianity, but then again, look at songs like Jesus Christ Pose and Wooden Jesus. I don't think this one is Chris's preaching of the word of God. He has used many biblical references in the past years, none of which have been pro-religion. Either way, though, it's an awesome song.
And to whomever said that Chris should learn to play an instrument: he started out on drums, then learned guitar and bass. He also played the piano as a boy, and is listed as playing the banjo and harmonica on the Temple of the Dog album.

when this song came out, my fiancee and i were split. we started talking again in emails, so i sent him these lyrics cuz they fit our situation so well. it was the last email he read from me before he shot himself. this song haunts me, but i have to listen to it when it's on the radio or when i think of him.

A lot of stuff happened to me during this song's prime. I guess you could say it brings back a lot of good memories. Tugs at my soul. Not only does the song rock my mind, but it brings up the good days in the past. Now thats a good song for ya.

Wow. I see a LOT of conflict goin on in here. If you feel the need to say what the song "means to you" then go ahead. But no one should be judging that. I am sure that we all have our own opinions of this song. But don't fight over who's is right and who's is wrong. There is no right or wrong opinion. That's why they call it an opinion.
This song is really good! Audioslave kicks ass!!
