The Sound Of Silence Lyrics
Send "The Sound Of Silence" Ringtone to your Cell

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools" said I,"You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

There's nothing to be disliked about this song. It's so metaphorical that it takes a really deep mind to comprehend it.
Or maybe that's just me complimenting myself. XD

If any of you are familiar with the book The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, it actually has quite a few parallels with the song.
The book is about maybe 4 characters, who wouldn't normally come in contact with each other except they all talk to this deaf mute named Singer. Obviously, Singer can't talk, but they all pour out his secrets to him. They revere him as a god, basically. The whole 'sound of silence' theme fits well, here.
Another reference, one of the characters keeps finding scriptures written on the walls of buildings of the slums. It turns out to be some man trying to convert non-believers of Christ, but that kind of ties in the "words of the prophets were written on the subway walls and tenement halls".
Basically, if you've read the book you'll see what I'm talking about. :)

Check out "Old School"-- the song plays at the scene where Will Ferril almost drowns.

I think this song is a reminder that we all sing our own songs of whats interesting to us in life and that EVERYONE has that song that is equally important and interesting. When you meet someone you forget how deep their story might be and judge them quickly. The 'songs that voices never shared, no one dared' are there, it just takes time to hear them. Ok that sounded craper than i intended.

I agree that this song is about people being too preoccupied with themselves to listen to anyone else, but I also think they mean that people are shallow. When they say people are talking without speaking and hearing without listening, I think they mean people are just talking about nothing and don't say anything important or insightful and are just talking and not really listening or caring what they're talking about. When they say silence, I think they mean silent as lacking meaning, not necessarily lacking sound.

Everyone needs to read the book 'Fahrenheit 451' because it goes hand in hand with this song. If you read it already and think its just about book burning, read it again and be less stupid this time. I looked up this song because I watched 'The Graduate'. One of the best lyrical songs ever, along with 'Subdivisions' by Rush.

Whichever moron from "Fuckers R Us" magazine (their technical name) rated this as one of the worst songs of all time can come and talk to me. This song is completely exquiste- a jem for all mankind to treasure. And to all the idiots who believe that Simon and Garfunkel are just a pair of old fogies still trying to cling to a bit of undeserved fame: please, without further hesitation, go screw yourselves!!! These two men have done what no one has and what people in the future can only hope to accomplish; they have weiled both Truth and Beauty so effortlessly, that they themselves are now the very definition of each. So all you finger biting, corporate rooting, MTV watching scoundrels will be weeded out, so help me God!!!!...... Whew! Now that that's over, I can resume with my pilates.

Agreed. One of the best songs out there. Even though I'm 21, I really hate all modern music. Britney spears? Toss her off a high building for all I care! Give my S&G's 'Sound of Silence' any day of the week.

I would disagree that this is about autism, though it fits. They hardly bow to neon signs.
My perception of this is that this is a reflection of how society has come to idolize the technological things in life far more than anything else, so much that they ignore those who might suggest anything else. This would create a deafening silence indeed, given that so many participate in it.
