You can try to make out it's as straight as you like, but this song was written by John after going on holiday with Brian Epstein, the Beatles' (gay) manager, and witnessing his struggle trying to live with a sexuality that was at the time illegal. So it says "she"... big deal. You think he was going to talk explicitly about it and risk alienating everyone?
Seems like even in these "enlightened" times people can't accept the truth... THE BEATLES WOULD NEVER SING ABOUT GAYS! IT'S SCANDALOUS! IT'S WRONG!... whatever. Deal with it.

I love this song and singing it(though I can't sing and I have to change "she" to "he") and I love playing it on the guitar too. I love the way it sounds and the lyrics are amazing. I can think of a couple of shows where this song can be used for characters.

Wait, gay? wtf? of course its not. nothing bad with gays, just the lyrics are talking about a girl, and the beatles arent gay.
This is a good song, btw...

Well, if it was gay, then why would he say "If she's gone I can't go on"?

I think it was illegal to have that kind of... sexuality in those days, though.

Wow. I cannot find words to depict my feeling toward this song ... Wow. just --- ARGH! Just -- FUCK they were brilliant! I mean -- ARGH! Wow. It just blows my FUCKIN' mind!!!
Seriously, though, SUCH a -- er -- *struggles for words* ... Eihgn, it's useless to try to find words for this. Wow. That's all I can say.
PS - I was amazed at how Dylan influenced this song is. I mean, it's to be expected what with the bandhaving started listening to Dylan at that time, and Dylan intorducing them to marijuana and all, but still .... wow.

I've done this song for over 20 years, it's not hard for me to sing but then again I think I just got lucky with the key. I play it out of G.

I don't think that they're talking about a hidden love.
it sounds more like romeo and juliet

This song came out right when the Beatles started to experiment with mariquana. What is the forbidden love that is being spoken about. Either way, the Beatles show that even after 40 years Eddie Veddor's cover cannot compete
