Comfortably Numb Lyrics

Send "Comfortably Numb" Ringtone to your Cell

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

O.K.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more aaaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good.
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

While most songs on The Wall were written by Waters alone, most of the music for "Comfortably Numb" was written by David Gilmour, who originally recorded it for his first solo album. Gilmour later decided not to use it for his album, and instead brought his demo of it to The Wall sessions.

The song is one of two tracks on The Wall which are completely freestanding and do not fade into or out of an adjacent track. (The other freestanding song is "Mother.") This is because on the original LP there was a break on the music as side three of the album finished. (However, for the CD release of earlier Pink Floyd records, such as The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, crossfades were added to link the two sides of the respective albums.)

According to Rolling Stone the lyrics came from Roger Waters' experience when he was injected with tranquillizers for hepatitis by a doctor prior to playing a Pink Floyd show in Philadelphia on the band's 1977 tour for the Animals album.[2] "That was the longest two hours of my life," Waters said. "Trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm." The experience gave him the idea which became this song.

Waters and Gilmour disagreed about how to record the song as Gilmour preferred a more grungy approach to the verses. In the end, Waters' preferred opening to the song and Gilmour's final solo were used on the album. Gilmour would later say, "We argued over 'Comfortably Numb' like mad. Really had a big fight, went on for ages." [Rock Compact Disc magazine, September 1992]

Like the rest of the songs on the album, "Comfortably Numb" tells a part of the story of Pink, the album's protagonist. Pink, feeling completely isolated from society, cannot stand the pressures of life as a rock star and collapses in his hotel room before leaving for his concert. A doctor is sent into the room and gives Pink an injection that gives him the energy he needs to perform. The lyrics are written as a conversation, with Waters voicing the doctor and Gilmour voicing Pink.

One of the greatest guitar solos of all time. David Gilmour is underrated but his legacy will stand the test of time with this masterpiece.

this song isnt about the drugs people are thinking about, its actually about how a sleeze docter shot up Roger Waters with tranqulizers to off set his battle with hepatitis before a show. i got that from the rolling stone's 500 greatest songs of all time which it ranks 314 which is absolutly criminal. Anyone else notice Pink Floyd takes a back seat in every Rolling Stone's "Greatest" articles? David Gilmour ranked 82 in 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Youre telling me that Kurt Cobain(12) is a greater guitarist sorry thats a travisty. Of the 100 greatest artists of all time "the immortals" Pink Floyd isnt even on the list.. Although it doesnt matter what rolling stone says i just believe they should get some more recognition in my opinion, the worlds most popular music magazines. I'll let Floyds sucess speak for itself but cmon honestly why did you watch Live 8 two summers ago.. thats right Pink Fuckin Floyd

This song is only rated a 4.9? This should be a five!

David gilmour is a fucking awesome guitarist. The soloes on this track gives me chills down my spine, no matter how many times i hear em. Did you, by the way, know that the endsolo in this song was voted #4 best guitar solo, ever in guitar magazine?

What a beautiful song. And no, it has nothing to do with drugs. Listen to the ENTIRE album and you'll understand.

What PharoahVIII is perfect. That's exactly it.
dreama_way 29/05/2005 14:45:41
it's a comparison between being high and having a fever. both times everythings out of whack and nothing makes sense. he's practically delirious with the whole hands balloons thing.

i never knew anyone covered this song! is it worth it to check it out and compare the two? i doubt it. pink floyd just has this "sound". they're this whole other level of music. they really know how to get the audience into the song.
ZEPhead 15/04/2005 02:10:16
It should have been illegal to cover this..

Only Pink Floyd could get that feeling.

Tortured Love 12/02/2005 16:08:04
This is a beautiful song, as well as meaningful. Regardless of what everyone else who opposes me thinks, they do not sway my love for this song, or Pink Floyd, for that matter.

I love this song! But, if you truely like Pink Floyd you will note that drugs are not needed to make them good. They are already amazing and no amount of weed can make it better. Has anyone heard the Scissor Sister's version? IT IS ATROCIOUS! I can't even begin on how much they have ruined a truely amazing song. Also if you like this, listen to Echoes (It's on 'Meddle') or Bran Damage is also good. The wall is a great album... and the version on P.U.L.S.E. is even better.
PinkFloyd57189 14/03/2004 04:26:06
Greatest Pink Floyd song! Except it is about Sid Barret overdosing on Acid not about heroin. The song is a doctor talking to him as he is tripping out on acid before a show!

Pillow behind your head, stretched out on the bed. Glass of wine in one hand, something to smoke in the other and of course this song playing! Never been more relaxed:-)

It's all simple math once you think about it.

Some weed + a Pink Floyd album = A really good time
LinkinStein 18/10/2003 19:54:51
Pink Floyd are one of the best bands ever and this is one of their best songs. Pink Floyd deserve respect.

All times are in Greenwich Mean Time.
The time is now 08:03:52.
