LIVIN' FOR YOU
Al Green
(Al Green; W. Mitchell)

I guess there's no good reason for livin'...
But I'll keep on livin' for you, baby...
There's nothing else to do, babe...
But spend my life holding you and lovin' you...
Oh...
If I ask you more than one million times to forgive me...
You think of a reason why...
that you should make me cry (don't make me cry)...
walk out and say goodbye away from me...
Oh...
I'm tired of the bright ideas about leavin' me...
when you know you ain't goin' nowhere...
but here with me...
here with me...
Let me tell you a thing...
stop and think of just how good I've been to you baby...
I'm causin' no trouble for you baby...
this story just can't be true, baby...
how can I convince you, baby...
but just tell you the truth...
I'm livin' for you... givin' for you... waitin' for you...
(lemme tell you what I'm doin'...)
I'm layin' for you... prayin' for you... workin' for you...
(...livin' my life, I tell you that...)
I'm livin' for you... givin' for you... givin' for you...
layin' for you... prayin' for you... workin' for you...
(everything I do I still...)
do with you... (something to) do with you...

Al Green's "Livin for You" was the singer's first number one hit without the involvement of drummer Al Jackson Jr. Jackson along with producer Willie Mitchell and Green co-wrote the singer's million-sellers including "Let's Stay Together," "You Oughta Be With Me," and his classic radio-aired LP track "Love and Happiness." Jackson (along with the Memphis Horns who were also heard on Green's hits) was also one of the key links between Green and his soul man predecessor Otis Redding. Jackson as a member of Booker T. and the MGs backed Redding on his many sides recorded for Memphis-based Stax Records including the gold R&B/ pop number one ballad "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay." Jackson's Stax connection was what drew him away from Green's camp. The drummer was often on tour with the MGs. "Livin for You" also marked Green's return to a somewhat harder soul sound found on his pre-million sellers like "Tired of Being Alone" and his cover of the Temptations' "Can't Get Next to You." It also mirrored the religious conversion that was taking part in his life. The effusive "Livin for You" made it to number one R&B and number 19 pop in early 1974. The Livin for You album went gold, yielded the Top Three R&B smash "Let's Get Married," topped the R&B charts, and broke the pop Top 24.
