Eve Of Destruction Lyrics
Send "Eve Of Destruction" Ringtone to your Cell

The Eastern world, it is explodin'
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill, but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'
But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say?
And can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy, and you
Tell me over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'
And you tell me over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Think of all the hate there is in Red China!
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama!
Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space
But when you return, it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace
And tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Mmmm, no, no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

MY SON INTRODUCED ME TO THIS SONG AFTER HE HEARD IT IN A MOVIE (DEVIL'S REJECTS I BELIEVE) AND AFTER LISTENING TO THE WORDS IT AMAZED ME THAT I NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE. AND BEING IT WAS WRITTEN 40 SOME YEARS AGO, YOU WOULD THINK IT WAS WRITTEN DURING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. WHICH LEADS ME TO ASK, WHY ARE THERE NOT MANY PROTEST SONGS OUT TODAY AFTER THE GEORGE W. BUSH FUCK UP? GREEN DAY DID A GREAT JOB WITH AMERICAN IDIOT, BUT WHERE ARE THE OTHER PROTEST SONGS BY THE NEXT GENERATION OF WAR HATING HIPPIES? WE'LL BORROW SOME FROM THE VIETNAM ERA.

Eve of Destruction" is a protest song written by P.F. Sloan in 1965. Several artists have recorded it, but the best-known recording was by Barry McGuire. This recording was made between July 12 and July 15, 1965 and released by Dunhill Records.
The song is a grave warning of imminent apocalypse, and considered by some to be the epitome of a protest song. It expressed the
frustrations and fears of young people in the age of the Cold War, Vietnam, the nuclear arms race, and the civil rights movement. The song, like many other popular songs of the day, gave its name to a gun truck used by United States Army Transportation Corps forces during the Vietnam war. The truck is on display at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum and is believed to be the only surviving example of a Vietnam era gun truck
McGuire also mentioned that "Eve of Destruction" was recorded in one take on a Thursday morning (from words scrawled on a crumpled piece of paper), and he got a call from the record company at 7:00 the following Monday morning, telling him to turn on the radio - his song was playing. The recording includes an "ahhh" where McGuire couldn't read the words.â??Youâ??re old enough to kill, but not for votinâ??â?? refers to the fact that in the United States, men were subject to the draft at age 18, while at that time the minimum voting age (in all but four states) was 21.

This song is relevant NOW, it's timeless. Why aren't more protest songs emerging?? I have a 'new episode' related to this administration.

One helluva song. It is sad that all the protest songs and protests couldn't stop wars....but Godd....it felt so good to sing them....and the protests....well....those felt good to....if for no other reason than to get out there and let the world know how you felt.

A rebutal song in response to Eve of Destruction is Dawn of Correction by the Spokesmen (lyrics are on this site). It is a bit more dated but the lyrics are good and I like the song as much as I like EOD.

I heard this song in Social Studies today (we're studying the affects of protest music on the Vietnam War) and I fell in love with it. It is seriously one of the most beautiful, awe-inspiring songs I've ever heard (in a weird kind of way.

Barry McGuire's "Eve Of Destruction" still has the same effect on me it did all those years ago The only thing that's changed is the rank on my collar and the border I look across each night... ...Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Iraq, and Korea. There's concertina wire on the wall outside my window. There was an exchange of small weapons fire north and south just a week ago. Green tracers heading south. Red tracers heading north. The students are protesting in the streets. And, it's just a lanyard's pull -- forty eight seconds -- away from artillery rounds impacting. We're still here and, "you tell me o'er, oer, oer again my friend..."

I must say that this song is very powerful as I sit here and actually listen to it. I feel the anger in Barry's voice and I agree with this song all the way. Its just too bad that the world can't agree.

I believe this song is very relevant to any time when war weighs heavily on the minds of the people. But there is hope, as George Harrison said "you got to believe it's getting better all the time." Still what makes this song so powerful is Barry McGuire sings it. I love the way he starts off sounding like he's trying to teach us something and as song goes on he gets angrier and angrier that by the end it almost sounds likes he's pleading with ppl to change.

If people only knew the Real reasons for war in Iraq. It WON"T stop there...The Illuninati has been behind ever war since the French Revolution their main agenda has been world domination since 1776 and they are alive and well today. Hitler was a member of their elite he came closer to accomplishing their goal than anyone...thus far.

Ha, yes. But I bet the same words - minus the bullets - would resonate with King Arthur's men. "And tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow has lighted fools the way to dusty death." Macbeth, by Shakespeare.
And frankly, when we are talking about war in the (middle) east, we ARE talking about, oh, the last three thousand years, aren't we?
