I Am The Highway Lyrics
(written by: Chris Cornell)
Send "I Am The Highway" Ringtone to your Cell
Pearls and swine bereft of me
Long and weary my road has been
I was lost in the cities
Alone in the hills
No sorrow or pity for leaving I feel
Chorus
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
Friends and liars don't wait for me
I'll get on all by myself
I put millions of miles
Under my heels
And still too close to you
I feel
Chorus
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightening
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night
The night
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightening
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night
The night

THIS SONG ROCKS, AUDIOSLAVE IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE BANDS, IF YOU LIKE THEM YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THEIR SONG SHADOW OF THE SUN, FROM THIS ALBUM, I'M NOT SURE WHICH SONG IS BETTER, BUT ONE THING IS FOR SURE, ANY SONG BY AUDIOSLAVE IS AWSOME

This song is fantastic and Chris sings it very well, but as for him singing like David Bowie, I don't see it

totally like this song. i also like the soundgarden song "fell on black days", guess its kind of how my life feels about now. anyway as to what the lyrics of the song means, ill continue off what other people posted. the comment of pearls before swine from a bible passage indicates a message not to preach a message to people unwilling to hear it (the pearls are the message of god and the swine would be people unwilling to hear it). so his pearls (or his attidude or maybe even his life) along with swine (people not willing to listen or appreciate him) are bereft of him, which means (i think) that he has left this life so pearls and swine are lacking him (which the term bereft means).
the verse seems to say that people misunderstood him and perhaps used him. he is not someones rolling wheels (just a tool used to get around), he is the highway (the whole infastructure by which most all wheels travel by efficiently). anyways those are my two cents worth. like the comments others have posted.

I absolutely love Audioslave. But I'm also a big fan of Linkin Park, I was'nt much of a fan of Rage against the machine, but when that band teamed up with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden I was blown away. Not to mention Chris is super hot! Yummy is all I have to say!!

Carpetride, the lyric is pearls and swine, from the biblical reference; "Cast not your pearls before swine..." You should submit your interpretation to the website: www.kissthisguy.com , very humourous....

I have a slightly different view on what this song means, albeit, no more valid than Soundgardenslaves. I believe songs are open to interpretation. To me, the first verse is summarizing the authors feeling of being disconnected from society, he states "Pearls AND Swine", not just Pearls BEFORE Swine, which I took to meant that all people, good or bad, have left him feeling negative, and he is not sorry for having set himself apart (via suicide?)from all people, all facets of society, stemming from his negative interactions with humanity.
The chorus, to me, is his lamentations about never having met someone who could see HIS true worth, that people only would see what was superficial about him, rather that what he truely was about, ie. what value has a rolling wheel without a highway to drive upon, or a flying carpet without a sky to fly it in. The metaphores he uses are all saying the same thing, but very beautifully each time.
The second verse to me, basically reiterates the message of the first verse, but with more vehemence this time, stating he cannot get far enough away from people in general, and I believe he feels friends and liars are one and the same, impossible to distinguish. The first few times I listened to it, I believed it to be a song about a gilted lover, but now I believe it is more a commentary on a society and how materialistic it has become, hence the pearls and swine reference.

As for the meaning of the lyrics, I'll give it a shot....
The first line refers to all things good and bad in life, and possibly life itself, having either left him or having become no longer important to him. The rest of the first verse is a statement of how tiresome life has been, trying and being unable to find his place in it. He ends the verse by basically saying "if life has no place for me, then I have no place for it".
The second verse continues by saying for friends and "liars" (possibly the same thing, as he feels lied to and cheated about life in general) that he does not need anyone. The last part of the verse shows his feeling that no matter how hard he tries or what direction he chooses, he cannot differentiate himself enough to be unique. "Too close to you" might mean "too much like you" rather than actually being close to someone.
The chorus parts are saying that if I have no place at all, and no direction, I will just be everywhere. Being everywhere and being nowhere are essentially the same thing anyway. It's hard to say whether it's out of defiance or apathy that he chooses to say this, but I think it's a little of each. It sounds like he's defying the conformity of people and life in general because he uses the phrase "I am not your..." instead of "I am not the....".
I don't know if I'm right, but either way, it's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

EWWW ! How did anyone even get on the subject of linkin park? Linkin sucks pure and simple, they sound like 13 year olds, and the worst part is they rap in every song. Rap rock needs to die out or get played on hip hop stations.

I love this song Cornell is still the best, so , and the thing is, almost every song on the Cd could be a Classic, No offense Foo Fighters... But AUDIOSLAVE deserved the damn Grammy. Hey,by the way does anyone remember Temple of the Dog? Vedder and Cornell should team up again sometime

Yeh i agree whole-heartedly with last person. Its hard to pull off as many songs as Audioslave have that carry so much depth and powerful emotions and i admit i havent really listened to the lyrics that often but these ones are fantastic. Chris is such a great writer, but i prefer the old set up of rage against the machine, but they are both fantastic bands.

Hey, if you are in your 40s, don't you think they sound like one big rock band in the early 70s? Right, the CCR. Great.

Awesome, intense, beautiful song. Chris Cornell's voice is one of the best I've ever heard as far as rock vocals are concerned. Not up to Linkin Park standard? You have GOT to be joking! Audioslave poops all over Linkin Park, then they bust a u-turn so they can go back & poop on 'em again!
