I Shot The Sheriff Lyrics

Send "I Shot The Sheriff" Ringtone to your Cell

(I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!
I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.)
Yeah! All around in my home town,
They're tryin' to track me down;
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy,
For the life of a deputy.
But I say:

Oh, now, now. Oh!
(I shot the sheriff.) - the sheriff.
(But I swear it was in selfdefence.)
Oh, no! (Ooh, ooh, oo-oh) Yeah!
I say: I shot the sheriff - Oh, Lord! -
(And they say it is a capital offence.)
Yeah! (Ooh, ooh, oo-oh) Yeah!

Sheriff John Brown always hated me,
For what, I don't know:
Every time I plant a seed,
He said kill it before it grow -
He said kill them before they grow.
And so:

Read it in the news:
(I shot the sheriff.) Oh, Lord!
(But I swear it was in self-defence.)
Where was the deputy? (Oo-oo-oh)
I say: I shot the sheriff,
But I swear it was in selfdefence. (Oo-oh) Yeah!

Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town, yeah!
All of a sudden I saw sheriff John Brown
Aiming to shoot me down,
So I shot - I shot - I shot him down and I say:
If I am guilty I will pay.

(I shot the sheriff,)
But I say (But I didn't shoot no deputy),
I didn't shoot no deputy (oh, no-oh), oh no!
(I shot the sheriff.) I did!
But I didn't shoot no deputy. Oh! (Oo-oo-ooh)

Reflexes had got the better of me
And what is to be must be:
Every day the bucket a-go a well,
One day the bottom a-go drop out,
One day the bottom a-go drop out.
I say:

I - I - I - I shot the sheriff.
Lord, I didn't shot the deputy. Yeah!
I - I (shot the sheriff) -
But I didn't shoot no deputy, yeah! No, yeah!

What rock were you sleeping under? I heard the Clapton version long before i heard the Marley original. Both are great in their own wa, prrof that two very different artists can approach a great song and get two different but equally wonderful versions of it.
That takes talent all around.

I actually never knew that Eric did a cover...hmm...interesting, I'll have to check that out, but yea, this song is badass, I love Bob Marley and this is in my top three of my favorite somgs of his, I can never get tired of it.

I'd like to think that Bob and Eric probably had a pretty good respect for one another's styles of music. It has been said "The sincerest form of flattery is imitation." I think Clapton did this song first, but Bob Marley never would have done a version of it if he hadn't of liked it. And let's face it: whether you're a pot-head or not, it's a good song. Rest in peace Bob Marley. Thank you for giving the world your music. It's something many people treasure.

Uh, no, Tony. I actually hated the song for the first while that I heard it. It was Buffalo Soldier that got me into Marley's stuff. It was Layla (sp?) that got me into Eric Clapton's stuff.

Think about it... if it weren't for Clapton you (I mean we, most of us)probably would not have ever heard this song or of Bob Marley. This song introduced raggae music to more people than any other before it. Because of this song rock music fans throughout the world became interested in and accepted reggae as almost another variation of rock music. Marley was played on FM rock stations Before that the biggest songs associated Jamaican/west indies were things like "I Can See Clearly Now" and "Dayo-The banana boat song" referred to as calypso music. So, THANK YOU Eric Clapton!
