Haiti Lyrics
Send "Haiti" Ringtone to your Cell
haiti, mon pays, wounded mother i'll never see
ma famille set me free. throw my ashes into the sea.
mes cousins jamais nes hantent les nuits de Duvalier.
rien n'arrete nos esprits. guns can't kill what soldiers can't see.
in the forest we are hiding, unmarked graves where flowers grow. hear
the soldiers angry yelling, in the river we will go.
tous les morts-nes, forment une armee
soon we will reclaim the earth.
all the tears and all the bodies bring about our second birth
haiti, never free, n'aie pas peur des sonner l'alarme.
tes enfants sont partis, in those days their blood was still warm.

Nalgene - chances were you did not go when Haiti was still under the control of Duvalier. I hope you didn't go at that point in time, it would've been rather foolhardy. =/ Haiti was a very dangerous place to be for quite a while, and I think it's only now starting to get better.
The song is brilliant...trust a band from Montreal to make a bilingual track. =D

I've been two haiti twice in the last year, and it is nothing like what the song discribes. I love the arcade fire, but I have to say, I'm disapointed.

Brilliant. So F_cking brilliant! This entire album is one great progression but I love this song because this is where the tide of despair changes into hope. Then onto rebellion against the forces of evil...

I'm just a french guy from France which were looking for lyrics by Google... so I'll give my translation into english...
haiti, mon pays (my country), wounded mother i'll never see
ma famille ( my familly) set me free. throw my ashes into the sea.
mes cousins jamais nes hantent les nuits de Duvalier. (my cousins never haunt my Duvalier's nights - with an error at "nes" -> "ne"
rien n'arrete nos esprits. (nothing stops our spirits )guns can't kill what soldiers can't see.
in the forest we are hiding, unmarked graves where flowers grow. hear
the soldiers angry yelling, in the river we will go.
tous les morts-nes, forment une armee (every living deads form an army)
soon we will reclaim the earth.
all the tears and all the bodies bring about our second birth
haiti, never free, n'aie pas peur des sonner l'alarme. (don't be affraid to sound the alarm)
tes enfants sont partis (your childrens are gone), in those days their blood was still warm.

i do not think that you need to take french necessarily to enjoy the arcade fire, or this song. it's all basically great.

while discerning the language from the kindly reader (curse my latin studies, heh), this song is very very sad. Good, though.

i'm french canadian and your translation is accurate.
Duvalier is the name of the long time dictator that ruled the island for a while and was responsible for the death of many haitian.

i love this song...and in case anyone is interested, i have some lyrics corrections and translations, fun! The lyrics are "Haiti, mon pays" which means "Haiti my country" in French...Then the part with "mes cousins" is "jamais-nees hauntent les nuits du Duvalier" which means "my cousins, never born, haunt the nights of Duvalier" which i guess is a city somewhere or something. "Rien n'arretes nos esprits" means "nothing stops our spirits(hearts/souls)"...Tous les morts-nee forme une armee...means "all the newborn dead form an army"...N'aie pas peur de sonner l'alarme, means never be afraid to sound the alarm....and "Tes enfants sont partis" means "your children have gone." Please keep in mind that this is from my 3 years of college french so i may have made mistakes. Please feel free to correct any. Hope this makes people appreciate the beauty of the song even more! x/o-kitten
