In my opinion, Alexander may of been a dissapointing tragedy, much like the incident with Laika, the russion dog sent into space. I think this because towards the end the song goes on about how he fights with their father when he gets home from work.

With reference to the 'astranout dog' Laika, I think Alex is suppose to resemble someone who has gone on a life changing mission yet failed. I think he did it to try and prove his family wrong about him and perhaps has some hate towards his family for thinking little of him:'He tore our images out of his pictures-he tore our names out of his letters'
To me it is a very sarcastic song, the way it is sang too is very jovial, I don't think it is one of those happy yet dark lyric songs, I think the sarcasm is purposeful to get the image of Alex across.
The lyrics at the end about Alex starting fights too, are just basically what his family think about him, a bit of a looser who probably won't change that much.

maybe the name Alex has something to do with the book Into The Wild. In it, Chris (who goes by the name Alex) goes on a great adventure, an odyssy like around the US and eventually to Alaska. He let no one know where he was and what not. haha. Probably not, but hey come on, it was worth a shot.

Well.. how I see it .
Yeah Laika was that dog they sent into outer space to see if humans could stay alive out in space. it was set up so eventually her oxygen ran out and she died .. no real hope on retreiving her..
This Kid "Alexander" is like the neighborhood's "laika" in the way theyre testing something out on him for the good/safety of everyone else.. ("it's for your own good - it's for the neighborhood")
Other than that, I am lost . (oh -- by the way, theyre from Montreal)

ok ok I think I have something here, they made laiki stamps and stuff but after he died they took everything (the stamps and his name out of headlines so they wouldnt upset nayone) so when they say torn out of all the pictures and all the letters.... need I say more?

well laiki is a dog that they sent into space, russian for barker, and they had no way of bringing the dog back to earth so he died alone in space, so maybe this will help to figure out what the lyrics mean.

This song is so good, I liked it even though I had no idea what the band was singing about! But now I do, and it's even better! This is one of my favourite songs on the cd! Arcade Fire is the best! Why are there 5 neighbourhoods?!? why didn't they just name the song Laika? lol, I like their music but I don't know a thing about their songs! =)

Laika: The doomed Russian dog. No hope of rescue, no hope of return, no hope of being saved.
It's definitely significant to this song, piedood.
Someone once mentioned a comparison between this song and A Clockwork Orange (i.e., Alex was a main character in the movie, he referred to himself and his "friends" as brothers, etc.) Not sure I believe that, but take it as you will.

Not sure if this means anything, but Laika was the name of the first dog (well, animal actually) sent to space in Sputnik II on the 3rd of November, 1957. There was no way to return Laika to earth so she died in space about a week after the launch. The name "Laika" means "barker" in Russian.
From the looks of the lyrics it seems that this Alexander broke away from the family in various ways. "Great adventure" sounds like a sarcastic comment, using his own words against him, discerned from the succeeding lines of punishment -"for a year we caught his
tears in a cup! - and now we're gonna make you drink it!" I can only link the meaning of Laika the space dog to Alexander in the way that they both seem to have failed.
Maybe there's no connection intended...

I heard this for the first time today. I agree with you all that it is an amazingly crafted song. Beautiful lyrics and beautiful instrumentation combine to make this one of the best songs I've heard in a while.
