What I dream I had:
Pressed in organdy;
Clothed in crinoline of smoky Burgundy;
Softer than the rain.
I wandered empty streets
Down past the shop displays.
I heard cathedral bells
Tripping down the alley ways,
As I walked on.
And when you ran to me
Your cheeks flushed with the night.
We walked on frosted fields of juniper and lamplight,
I held your hand.
And when I awoke and felt you warm and near,
I kissed your honey hair with my grateful tears.
Oh I love you, girl.
Oh, I love you.
Aside from its beautiful lyrics, in my opinion this song is the pinnacle of Paul Simon's musical career. Simply *astonishing* in its intricacy. Try learning it on an acoustic guitar sometime. I tried for TWO YEARS and still couldn't get the bridge right.
Best recorded versions of this song are on their "Old Friends" compilation (original version) and "Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits" (live version, which I prefer).
I found out about this song when John Frusciante sang it at a gig and I came home and looked it up; I completely and utterly LOVE IT. It's *so* beautiful...
I was wondering...has anyone ever seen the live performance from "Songs of America"? I can't even begin to describe it. Thank God for Art's dry mouth. ;)
