Out of all the songs that Al Green collaborated on with Willie Mitchell, none sounds better than the Top Five hit "I'm Still in Love With You," from the 1972 album of the same name. The two forged a brand new, unique, and easily identifiable style of soul music that formed the link between the raw Memphis-style 1960s brand of the music and the smoother, sexually charged urban style of the 1970s and beyond, as typified by the Gamble & Huff Philly soul productions. "I'm Still in Love With You" is a potent and undeniable combination of excellent writing, production, and performance. Mitchell puts the song together so well that it sounds lean and stripped-down, even though it has a string section, a horn section, and a group of female backing vocalists, all in addition to the famous Hi Rhythm Section of Howard Grimes and Al Jackson on syncopated drums and the Hodges brothers — Charles on organ and piano, Mabon "Teenie" on guitar, and Leroy on bass. All of the instrumental elements are well-placed, popping in and out in various positions in the stereo spread and never stepping on each other (the song breathes) — and it's all mixed dry, without much if any reverb. In its own way, the song sounds as expertly arranged as the best Beatles or Beach Boys productions. And Green sounds absolutely inspired over the amazing groove and the sort of seamless and intuitive playing that only comes from a group of musicians who have been playing together for years (in this case, brothers). His style is marked by what he chooses not to sing; it is all about simmering and smoldering, so that the rare flame-up is that much more effective. Just above an intimate whisper, Green purrs, "Though it hurt me so/To let you know/When I look in your eyes/Let me know/How you feel/Let me know/That our lovin' is real/When it seems to me/That I'm wrapped up in your love/Don't you know/That I'm still in love with you." The lyrics sound simplistic, but it is almost a Zen-like simplicity; the words are a part of the music, Green stopping and starting, holding back, suppressing, trying to find the right way to express himself. Eventually he allows himself to work up to a smooth falsetto for the vamp. He never screams or screeches; just a graceful sustained falsetto note is enough to convey the emotion.
