The Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)
Diana Ross
(M. Masser/G. Goffin)
Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know?
Do you get
What you're hoping for
When you look behind you
There's no open door
What are you hoping for?
Do you know?
Once we were standing still in time
Chasing the fantasies
That filled our minds
You knew how I loved you
But my spirit was free
Laughin' at the questions
That you once asked of me
Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know?
Now looking back at all we've planned
We let so many dreams
Just slip through our hands
Why must we wait so long
Before we'll see
How sad the answers
To those questions can be
Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know?
Do you get
What you're hoping for
When you look behind you
There's no open door
What are you hoping for?
Do you know?
They have creams for that sort of thing.
The original version is much better than the scream queens covers. The movie it's from is the old soap of the girl who make sit big but forgets about love on the way. Billy Dee Williams looks fine as hell in the movie, and Miss Ross is at the height of her ability, but still it looks kind of lame and dated. Diana Ross designed the outfits she wears in the movie.
I continuously searched for this song when i heard mariah Carey's version (one of the best too) and forgot it was Theme from mahogany, i searched all over the internet for Theme from Miami Vice!!!!! (don't ask me how i got the two mixed up, but now i know why i wasn't successful) and now that i've found the lyrics, i can sing along to one of the best songs i've heard in a loooong time! (who said oldies are goodies? i wanna kiss them)
I first heard this 'sung' by a Filipino drag queen from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, who did a 12 inch version of the song that was recorded live at a concert. What an awsome song - a masterpiece! And the music was sublime. Sadly, I've never found this version of the song.
