I think this is a "society is going down the shitter" kind of song because the kids are growing up without meaning. They get bigger and become like gods, but their hearts don't grow at the same rate and get "torn up" as a result. And even the kids know that they are destroying the world and we're all going to hell. (look out below)

Hmm, I think I read this song a little differently to everyone else who's commented. I don't think it's saying that growing up is a good thing or mourning those that can't grow up. I think the line 'I guess we'll just have to adjust' is so filled with bitter sarcasm - it's a protest against growing up meaning fitting in with society's expectations. The phrase reminds me of something a psychiatrist/psychologist might say after a young person has been through a trauma (e.g. bereavment), 'He's not adjusting well.' But death is rubbish, kids are seen as causing nothing but trouble and 'turning every good thing to rust' and adults are trying to 'turn the Summer into dust' - why should kids adjust to that?
Yes, the risk of having a childlike heart is getting it 'torn up' but that's a price worth paying. Someone told him not to cry but now he sees that it's a lie because it's made his heart grow cold.
A kind of 'I'm not mad, society is' message.

TO echo what everyone has said this song is incredible. The best word I can come up with is it's cathartic. This is the one song I scream at the top of my lungs in the car (Especially the lines "I guess we'll just have to adjust" and "You better look out below". While there are plenty of songs i sing along too this song has a different effect. Again it's a cathartic effect. am i the only one?

It is so great to see that there are so many peopel who feel the same. Crying and tears, hay people I am 35! I could not stop with crying. And the best is that fortunatly they are not so popular so it would not destroy greatnes of this song like the flaming lips - do you realise is.

Wonderful song. I think it's about coming of age woefully unprepared. Some people get older but just can't grow up, especially without a good solid foundation i.e. good parents/no divorce/happy childhood. I'm probably reading too much into it but it's a powerful song - take from it what you will.

U2 used this song when they are about to climb the stage for the vertigo tour shows.
It gave me a very special feeling then already. After the show I discovered the band behind this great number.
It gives me a melancholic feeling, it makes me smile and brings tears to my eyes at the same time.
There are over a trillion songs and somtimes you find a little treasure.and this is a very big little treasure

Wake up and une ann'ee sans lumiere have to be one of the most powerful and inspirational songs I have ever heard (besides thriller) this band is simply revolutionary, the soft rock combined with the french here and there makes a completely unique band that is the Arcade Fire. Go and buy the cd, you wont regret it. It is one of those cd's where every song is good (like the beatles cd's).

Was listening to the album and I didn't have the inlay card so I checked this site for the lyrics. Reading Power Out started the feeling in the pit of my stomach, Wake Up just blew me away. Tears! For the first time in four years I cried, I cried for longer than I can remember. This album has moved me each time I put it on so much so that I know each listen will put me in a state of confusion, hope and raw emotion for the day. This is vital music that should be goaded by anyone wishing to feel without the pulling heartstrings.Just pure, honest humanity glowing from the speakers. Thank You Arcade Fire.

i thought that the lines "children - wake up - hold your - mistake up - before they - turn the
summer into dust"
were so telling as to education and the expectations today. it seems more and more common that students are being pressured to achieve perfection, with rising costs of college and cut-throat competition. this may be reading into the lyrics a little bit too much, but i really really identified with it in that way...that if kids continue to struggle secretly with the workload or undue responsibilities forced upon them, they will only continue to be trodden on.
by holding up one's mistakes for speculation as opposed to supressing them to fulfill a facade, there is so much more that can be learned and benefited from.
amazing band.
