Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Lyrics

i woke up with the power out, not really somethin to shout about. ice
has covered up my parents hands, don't have any dreams don't have any
plans. i went out into the night, i went out to find some light. kids
are swingin from the power lines, nobody's home so nobody minds
i woke up on the darkest night, neighbors all were shouting that they
found the light - "we found the light." - shadows jumpin' all over my
walls, some of them big, some of them small. i went out into the night
i went out to pick a fight with anyone. light a candle for the kids,
jesus christ don't keep it hid!
ice has covered up my parents hands, don't have any dreams don't have any plans. growin' up in some strange storm, nobody's cold, nobody's
warm. i went out into the night, i went out to find some light. kids
are dyin' out in the snow, look at them go - look at them go!
and the power's out in the heart of man, take it from your heart put
it in your hand. what's the plan? what's the plan? is it a dream? is
it a lie? i think i'll let you deceide. just light a candle for the
kids, jesus christ don't keep it hid! cause nothing's hid, from us
kids! you ain't foolin' nobody - with the lights out! and the power's
out in the heart of man, take it from your heart put it in your hand.
and there's something wrong in the heart of man, you take it from your
heart and put it in your hand! where'd you go?!

i LOVE this song. it's so powerful and amazing. it's not about some hot girl with no pants on, it's actually about something important: selfishness and the consequent suffering it brings. I love it that it has genuine meaning and the music to it has got so many layers too! best song by far on the album. can't WAIT for Neon Bible :D :] :)

What a freaking talented band, man. Wow. Neighborhood 3 is their best song too. I'm getting Funeral soon. They have such a unique sound and they're so hard not to like. Great song, great band.

I think this song is about how greed and selfishness in society have allowed us to ignore so many problems because we don't have "light" in our hearts any more. We would rather have it in our hands (greed) than in our hearts (happiness).

I think this band is amazing they have such a unique style i love them. Whoever said that the song should be written for christine aguilera and the lyrics suck youre really dumb its kind of sad. Especially if you compare a band like the arcade fire who has deep meaning in their lyrics to some wierdo sell-out idiot like christina aguilera i mean seriously, what the fuck. Anyways this song is sweet.

I don't know about the rest of you, but one of the reasons I'm drawn to this band is its familiarity to The Talking Heads in more than one significant aspect. By far, this is my favorite song on the album just for it's uncanny likeness to something you'd hear coming out of David Byrne's mouth.

This song is great, it's upbeat and the lyrics are amazing...they really make you think. I'd have to say it's about a bit more than just the ice storm in Montreal...that may have been the inspiration for it, though. I think it's about so many people being indifferent to life, in general...I think the part where he says "ice has covered up my parents eyes, don't know how to see, don't know how to cry/growin' up in some strange storm, nobody's cold, nobody's warm" is about the passion for life that seems to fizzle as you get older...younger people seem to be more idealistic, passionate, interested in life and those who are not should not hold the younger people back, or prevent them living their lives to the fullest. Just my opinion.

Scott from Long Beach California...new to the forum...and fairly new to The Arcade Fire's music...I am a HUGE older Genesis fan...when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer and the ONLY lead singer in my opinion that the band ever had! I think the lead singer of The Arcade Fire sounds eerily like Peter especially in the Power Out song...does anyone else agree? Thanks

This is my favorite song on the album, it's simply amazing. I love this band! Being from Montreal myself, I think this song is about the big Ice Storm we had a few years back, and most of the city lost power for a couple of days... It's the impression I get when he talks about the power being out, and ice on his parents' heads and eyes. It was a very big deal when it happened, and it affected everyone in the city directly, the city itself being paralyzed for 3 days. Hope this is helpful!
