Astronomy Lyrics

Send "Astronomy" Ringtone to your Cell

The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Like acid and oil on a madman's face
His reason tends to fly away
Like lesser birds on the four winds
Like silver scrapes in May
Now the sands become a crust
And most of you have gone away
Come Susy dear, let's take a walk
Just out there upon the beach
I know you'll soon be married
And you want to know where the winds come from
Well it's never said at all
On the map that Carrie reads
Behind the clock back there you know
At the four winds bar
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Four winds at the four winds bar
Two doors locked and windows barred
One door let to take you in
The other one just mirrors it
Hey, hey, hey, hey
In hellish glare and inference
The other one's a duplicate
The queenly flux, eternal light
Or the light that never warms (repeat twice)
The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Miss Carrie nurse and Suzy dear
Would find themselves at the four winds bar
It's the nexus of the crisis
The origin of storms
Just the place to hopelessly
Encounter time and then came me
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Call me Desdenova, eternal light
These gravely digs of mine
Will surely prove a sight
And don't forget my dog, fixed and consequent
Astronomy...a star (repeat indefinitely)

A comment from a old man..... Blue Oyster Cult penned this song as part of a total album story. Doesn't make much sense on its own. A little more sense when the entire album and music is taken into consideration. In other works you have to follow the story from the beginning for it to make sense. At any rate the other songs on the album (CD) didn't get the same notariety. Drugs? It was the early 70's....wouldn't surprise me a bit.

That said, This whole Metallica vs BOC is meaningless. Personally I think the fact that Metallica re-recorded the song with their style is a tribute to BOC. Obviously Metallica has a respect for the classics. I like both versions.

god.. damn, southern bitch. how can you use "y'all" twice in the same sentence? jesus christ. wow, that annoyed me so much, i'm sure i would have killed people if i heard you say it in person. anyway, blue oyster cult is great, and normally i'm partial to the original versions of songs, but this is one of very few exceptions. the boc version is lacking something essential that i can't place. wtf is desdenova? i've been looking all over the internet for it?

Look, ya'll have something wrong with ya'll!
of course Blue Oyster Cult sings is better!! for those out there who have heard the metallica version b4 the original version, i feel sorry for you! that song is a classic, the CD its on is actually named "Astronomy". how can you say the metallica version is better, hard rock wouldn't be here if it wasn't for classic rock! all of ya'll need to down load some of their songs (inclding "Don't Fear the Reaper", "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll", "I'm Burning for You"!, and they even sang "Godzilla")
And yes they were on drugs when writing that song, thats why you don't understand what they're saying - prolly because ya'll have never been on drugs b4.
I CAN'T BELIEVE A GIRL HAD TO TELL YA'LL THAT!!
~ain't nuthin like the classics baby!~

Im still trying to figure out the meaning behind the lyrics but I can't believe what i've been reading!
Blue Oyster cults Astonomy is the best version out there, metallica can't even come close to replicating the feeling and sound. The song is a mellow song, metallica did NOT need to go and make it a heavy song. Thats like taking the Eagles Hotel California and trying to make it a heavy screaming metal song.
I believe everyone has their own opinion on the song but I dont think its fair for one person to say that the metallica vs. is better and the boc version sucks and when someone says that the BOC version is better that metallica fan bitches and vice versa. To each their own but I personally am not a fan of the way they did it.

This song is great! I can't believe how much I liked it...! Never heard the original. And you're right KORN's cover of Pink Floyd does suck.
Tolkien_Soldier 16/04/2005 02:04:34
well, people, i think no matter whether you like this song or not (or if you prefer this version to Blue oysster's-i've never heard this one, jes the Cult's) we can all agree it doesnt suck even 1/3 as bad as Korn's cover of the wall does. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND MORE BLUE OYSTER CULT CDs?
Dead On Arrival 19/03/2005 05:08:35
Kay, first off. I'm still a bit puzzled myself as to what the meaning is.. But, from what I know, it's got some awesome lyrics! Awesome song all together!

Second. METALLICA IS THE GREATEST BAND OUT THERE AND NO ONE HAS THE RITE TO BITCH AND COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM! FUCK YOU IF YOU DONT LIKE METALLICA CAUSE YOU DONT KNOW GOOD MUSIC! IN FACT, YOU WOULDNT KNOW GOOD MUSIC IF IT CAME UP AND SMAKED YOU IN THE FACE!

METALLICA FUCKING RULES!!!! \m/
Extatique Chaos 06/02/2005 22:24:49
wow... lots of Metallica bashing going on here... but we all have our opinions. both bands brought their own interpretation to the song with the way they performed it. simple as that.
while i somewhat agree with the true love/ arranged married bit... but i also think it speaks of a sexual encounter. the lyrics "i know you'll soon be married, and you want to know where winds come from" hint to way back in the day when astronomy, love, and marriage were connected. astronomers hinted as the fact that the winds, and tides were part of the moons cycle. perhaps the word "winds" was used as a substitute for sex, since in those times, it was very taboo to speak of such things.

"On the map that Carrie reads" could refer to the plans for "Susie's" life. what she will do, where she will go.

"Four winds at the Four Winds Bar, Two doors locked and windows barred, One door to let to take you in, The other one just mirrors it" the 4 winds could refer to the possible directions young Susie could take, and the Four Winds bar, could refer to the location in which she feels she's trapt. 2 doors locked, could be 2 choices that "Susie" feels are not options. One door, could mean that there is only one choice that is correct. "the other one just mirrors it" might mean that the final choice would only back to show all that could have been if she had choosen a different path.

I have more theories on this song... but it's too much to post here. If you wanna know more, hit me up.
SwordmasterDI 10/07/2004 07:00:07
I have read pennowizzo's explanation for the song, and I agree it makes sense. Just one thing though, why does the girl have to be committing suicide? Towards the beginning of the song, it makes conotations of the girl (Susie) being with another man. This can indicate that Susie had a choice between the eternal light (her true love, the one she took the walk with) and the light that never warms (her badly arranged marriage.) But regardless of the meaning, it is still a really good remake of the song. I heard the original version, and I like the Metallica version better. If a person likes the BOC version more, they must be smokin' something really good, and so I want the name of their dealer.
farfa 31/03/2004 11:14:31
Yes I've heard that rumor too. And in fact, the lyrics have some indications about that... but I like so much the explanation of pennowizzo!

First of all both metallica and blue oyster cult Kick A$$. If you dont like Astronomy i dont blame you, most of the copys on the internet are their original version of the song which was not made with the best equipment and it seems to me like they never finished the song, the put it on alot of their albums and the versions get better as time passes. I personally think that The metallica version rocks they were able to put some of the intensity into the song that it was missing but both songs are great

Btw there is a rumer that the song is about a lesbians first encounter, i dont no how true it is however
Bels 22/03/2004 13:45:59
There is just one thing I have to say. I like metallica allot but this was just one song that no one shout cover. If you would have been there at a live gig of the blue oyster cult You could understand the intesetie of the song And no other band can create that atmosfer
And It's not about the susie it about his life and the choises we have to make that was the real intension
UnnamedFeeling 15/02/2004 03:55:12
Sorry, I'll have to agree with everyone else, I downloaded the Original 'Astronomy' .. The singer sounds like a woman. The Piano is annoying and the guitars and drum set isnt loud enough. Metallica remade this song in their style and it kicked ass.

P.S Its about Astronomy, At the start of Metallica's version, they have a sound that (to me) sounds like a nice soothing space sound. I don't hear it on the Original.

Keep goin Metallica I'm going with you 1000%, whatever you do.
lgp9999 31/12/2003 08:26:39
Oh, one more thing ShadyGirl. I listened to Blue Oyster Cult's version, and Metallica really didn't change the song much at all.
lgp9999 31/12/2003 08:21:21
Hey ShadyGirl. Patrick Briggs was a Baseball player you MORON!
semi_punk 16/12/2003 00:27:23
I've never heard this song, but i'm sure that Metallica did a wonderful job on it. Metallica kicks fuckin ass. so, ShadyGirl you better fuck right off. if Metallica and Blue Oyster Cult went head to head in a Battle Of The Bands, Metallica would definitely kick the fuckin shit out of Blue Oyster Cult.
So Put That In Your Pipe And Smoke It.

pennowizzo your discription is great, except i think that its not her nurse, its another man thats in love with her and doesn't want her to marry the rich guy. See beacuse hes saying that if she goes with him it will be eternal light, but if she goes with the other guy it will be the light that never warms.
abcmonkey78 06/08/2003 05:25:47
Ok ShadyGirl, I have a few things to say. One is, no, Metallica shouldnt go crawl into a hole and die, because they have been raved about for over 20 years now. Two, Blue Oyster Cult does not seem to even be on leoslyrics, so it must have been a really shitty song, or is extremely old, and no one remembers it. Three, youll never have everyone go and kill Patrick because if this song, because it sounds like no one else besides you wants to. Finally, again, no one really wants to go out and kill the entire band, so why dont you keep your retarded criticism to yourself, and if you really have that much of a problem with a song, did you ever think of NOT listening to it again??? Getting onto positive points (this isnt for you ShadyGirl) Metallica did an amazing job with this song, no matter who it was by. And if it really is by Blue Oyster Cult, then Metallica has assisted in having them recognized for theyre ingenious lyrics.
ShadyGirl 20/06/2003 01:02:19
Hey this is the crappiest song I've ever heard in my intire life. I think Metallica should go find a hole to crawl in to and die. They have truely fucked up this intire song, it was orginally by Blue Oyster Cult, and then Metallica went and tried to re-do it, and it just resulted in laughter for me and my brother as we listening to Patrick Briggs try to "sing" it.. I think the song has been distorted into something hideous and we should all go kill him for bringing such crap into this world. None the less, we should go kill everyone else in his band afterwards for helping create this freak of nature. Download the real song Blue Oyster Cult-Astronomy
pennowizzo 18/06/2003 09:35:13
This song puzzled me for the longest time, so i sat down and tried to figure it out. What i think (and this is just my opinion) is that the girl Susie is some wealthy man's daughter that is trying to escape a badly arranged marriage. "his reasons tend to fly away" could be the father's poor choice of a husband. With her nurse, Susie discovers that her future husband is a bad man at the Four Winds Bar. The inference gives her two choices, the eternal light which i think is suicide and the light that never warms which could be her future with that husband. The nexus of the crisis could represent her agonizing decision. In the end she chooses the eternal light and kills herself. "don't forget my dog, fixed and consequent" could pertain to her loyal nurse Carrie. This is the best sense of this song that i could make, if there's anything you think i missed or got wrong, please let me know.
ChevroletPimpDaddy 06/06/2003 03:59:51
This song is great! Metallica kicks ass so it's not like any of their song are any less than awesome. I haven't quite figured out a theme for this song, but it's got... what ever it is, it's got it! Rock On!
