A Poem on the Underground Wall Lyrics

The last train is nearly due,
The underground is closing soon,
And in the dark deserted station,
Restless in anticipation,
A man waits in the shadows.

His restless eyes leap and scratch,
At all that they can touch or catch,
And hidden deep within his pocket,
Safe within its silent socket,
He holds a colored crayon.

Now from the tunnel's stony womb,
The carriage rides to meet the groom,
And opens wide and welcome doors,
But he hesitates, then withdraws
Deeper in the shadows.

And the train is gone suddenly
On wheels clicking silently
Like a gently tapping litany,
And he holds his crayon rosary
Tighter in his hand.

Now from his pocket quick he flashes,
The crayon on the wall he slashes,
Deep upon the advertising,
A single worded poem comprised
Of four letters.

And his heart is laughing, screaming, pounding
The poem across the tracks rebounding
Shadowed by the exit light
His legs take their ascending flight
To seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night.

If you found yourself to be this would-be poet,
what one word would you write?

I don't know what the song's about, but I love it. At first it struck me as being about a misunderstood loner. They mention him hiding in shadows and such. But you know, the song really makes me want to go out and write something totally nutty on a wall or something. Not profanity. Something random that extremely bored people can look at and think about.

This song was actually inspired by writing that was on the wall where they took the wednesday morning 3am cover. They didn't notice it until after they'd taken the picture, the so-called "All-familiar suggestion." (so-called by Garfunkel) and so then paul ended up writing a song about it.

I don't think it's about rebelling against society. I always took this song to be a commentary on the degradation of poetry. The narrator doesn't really think the angry shout of profanity on a subway wall is a poem, but society does, hailing any loud outburst as brilliant poetry. Nothing is sacred when we call a curse word written in anger poetry.

it's a rebellion against the world, a defiance against society... and its sung so... powerfully.. wow! great song!

I love this song. It makes you feel like you want to do it too. It's so powerful.

Very good song. Powerful imagery and poetry in this song, "And he holds his crayon rosary
Tighter in his hand"
a crayon rosary? that's pure genious.
