Is the song about religion? Probably not any organized religion as such, but there are definitely spiritual under(over?)tones here. The relationship aspect could be looked at as one between two people, where one lover is scorned and feeling mighty vindicated. Or perhpaps between a believer who has lost his faith and God. Or, and this is my personal view ( feel free to bash me and otherwise ridicule me as you see fit), Chris is speaking for God, as many prophets did in the old testament. Many times God pleaded with his chosen, reminded them of his unconditionally powerful love and the many times they turned to things which were unable to fulfill. Or maybe it's just a song about a guy who got dumped. E-mail me. Peace and Love.

This song could be about religion, as this is a frequent topic in Chris' songs, but when I first read the lyrics, I thought it was political... I don't think it's about a relationship, but it could be applied there too.

Let me tell you all from an experience I'm goin through now - this has GOT to be about a relationship! Thank the Gods for Audioslave! the lyrics and the way the song is delivered are helping me get through exactly what the lyrics are saying, and it's the only thing keeping me goin!!

I really do not think this song is about religion at all. I think it is about unrequited love and how much power one person can have over another. Saying it is about religion is really seeing more than is actually there.

Audio slave is all right, but come on. You have to love the bands they originated from a lot more. (Rage Against The Machine, and Soundgarden.) The only bad thing is Chris' voice flows way too much. He flows over the beat too many times. But the rest of the band makes up for that.

I have been a recent fan of Audioslave for the past few weeks now and i just discovered this song today. It really describes what is going on in peoples hearts but everyone else is afraid to voice. I think that Audioslave could easily be the next Nirvana.
Thank God for Audioslave!

i dono, to me, just about every song by audioslave has strong tones of religion. he set himself on fire for god, and he never found any fulfillment, and now hes given it up, or perhaps, he belives that god exists and refuses to be his "slave"
