Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) Lyrics
Send "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" Ringtone to your Cell
Close your eyes
Have no fear
The monster's gone
He's on the run and your daddy's here
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Out on the ocean sailing away
I can hardly wait
To see you come of age
But I guess we'll both just have to be patient
'Cause it's a long way to go
A hard row to hoe
Yes it's a long way to go
But in the meantime
Before you cross the street
Take my hand
Life is what happens to you
While you're busy making other plans
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Darling, darling, darling
Darling Sean

REPLYING TO EDIBLE SHOELACES:
Weep not for Julian. Do not forget that two of the more unique hits from the Beatles canon--LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS, and HEY JUDE, were inspired by Julian. John Lennon wrote LUCY based on a hallucination he had from seeing some of Julian's artwork as a toddler. And Paul McCartney wrote HEY JUDE, with the working title HEY JULES, as a sort of note to the young Julian concerning John's divorce to Cynthia and his new relationship with Yoko Ono, a letter of confidence with the wish of cheering up a sodden lad having to deal with his parents' divorce and new relationships.
So, shed no tear for Julian, Julian inspired his fair share of hits.
As for this song, most of Lennon's post-Beatles work was political, opinionated, rustic, rocking, but hardly sentimental and beautiful for beauty's sake. BEAUTIFUL BOY is the lone exception. I was 11 when Lennon was killed, and my Mom and Dad had this album, DOUBLE FANTASY, already. It was my first exposure to Lennon outside the Beatles, and I loved STARTING OVER and WOMAN and, like many, annoyed with Yoko's KISS KISS KISS. I found WATCHING THE WHEELS to be a bit maudlin, but now that I am older, it makes a little more sense to me. But when I was a child, hearing BEAUTIFUL BOY for the first time, I was struck with how a grown man could talk so gently to a son, and it be on a rock album. The kettledrum was the most evocative element of the song, at once Caribbean and exotic, but also light, playful, dreamy. The song is a gentle lullaby from father to son, which becomes ever more tragic in the wake of his murder, to imagine John singing this to Sean as he falls to sleep, only to awaken to never see his father again.

I really think that this song is lovely. However, it pains me to think how Julian must have felt when he heard this song *sigh*

The words of this song are made ever more emotional as my wife recently gave birth to twin boys and unfortunatly one of our babies never overcame the struggle to draw his first breath. The other 'beautiful boy' gives us so much joy and helps us get over the upsets and tears. God bless Noah, and guide our beautiful son Amos

Since the birth of my son, Jack, this song has really taken on a new meaning, it is hard to listen to it without getting a tear in my eye. I now understand what John was feeling when he wrote this song. I sing this to Jack at night and he really calms down.
