*shakes head at all the stupid ppl* its like she said we've paved the best part of the earth abd we are destroying the earth, plain and simple. the DDT verse is about ddt obviosly do you relieze that we decimated Not only the bald eagle population almost to the point of extinction, and now 30 years after we stopped using it the bald eagles are finally making a comeback, and the fact that you can still find traces of DDT in newborn babys, when there parents werent even born when we used DDT. so yea its about more then just paving paradise
be kind to your mother
earth wont be here for much longer in we continue to take advantage of her
Peace And Love

I get amazed at how Urban Legends develop. No wonder this country is going down hill (USA). With a little bit of checking it is easy to find out how and why Joni Mitchell wrote this song.
It is not about feces or urine. It is not about a DDT factory and bringing in employees by taxis.
Check your facts...
Joni said this about writing the song to journalist Alan McDougall in the early 1970's-"Living in Los Angeles, smog chocked L.A., is bad enough but the last straw came when I visited Hawaii for the first time. It was night time when we got there, so I didn't get my first view of the scenery until I got up the next morning. The hotel room was quite high up so in the distance I could see the blue Pacific Ocean. I walked over to the balcony and there was the picture book scenery, palm tree swaying in the breeze and all. Then I looked down and there was this ugly concrete car park in the hotel grounds. I thought 'They paved paradise and put up a parking lot' and that's how the song "Big Yellow Taxi" was born."

I just like the way the melody sounds. It's fun but peaceful. I first heard this song in the movie "Two Weeks Notice" and it was sung by a man. though I don't know who that man is. But i love how the words sound and fit together. Like an almost meaningless rhyme, and words that sound good in your mouth. But when you look deeper there is a very attractive and moving meaning.

I really like this song a lot. It's very beautiful and I don't think that anyone has been able to capture the spirit of the song like Joni Mitchell did. This is a song that should have never been remade because it was perfect in the first place.
It works on so many levels too. Even for someone who doesn't get the meaning of the song about how you shouldn't take things for granted, the tune is still catchy and her delivery is very spirited.

This song is very deep. Here are the meanings:
The "Big Yellow Taxi" represents a cup of urine.
The "Old Man" represents feces.
When she says they "Paved Paradise", she's referring to someone wipeing their ass.
The "Parking Lot" represents constipation.

This song actually does have background info about it.. Its based on something that was said to have happened in the late 60's and was covered up by the gov't. There was a big DDT factory which back then was highly toxic to everything, the people that owned the company also wanted to knock down a lot to build more and more.. hense paved paradise to put up a parking lot.. The DDT company started getting reports of it making people sick and harming animals and thing severly.. but the company didnt want to stop so they started firing the people that worked there and wanted to stop it.. Just so their company wouldnt be shut down and they could keep selling they bought a bunch of taxi's and used them to pick up the employees , so they wouldnt speak about it, and after they were picked up in the taxis they werent heard from again... hense the big yellow taxi took away my old man.. there might be some points in there i didnt go into depth about but thats the jist of it..

This song is HARDLY pointless, and I like to think it's more than just an environmental anthem, though it is a moving one. It's about taking things for granted - assuming they'll always be there for you to enjoy. But, paradise was paved over, all the trees were cut down, her old man took off, etc. etc. etc. It also demonstrantes another interesting social comment: deviation from the more common view (before the "hippy" era of thinking) that nature and the forest were something to be feared. It is an excellent illustration of love for the earth. It is basically a plea to realize the treasures you have before you, and to appreciate the simple things in life.

are you serious? this song is far from pointless, it's an environmental anthem in its own right! And i love the melody, it's simple but its brilliant and catchy and got her message across to the masses.

how can counting crows (a talented band, i'll grant you - colourblind is very beautiful) beat joni mitchell? for 1, joni WROTE the song, and you can tell - the emotion present in the joni version cannot be recreated by cc simply because it is HER song, from her heart, her feelings, her soul. the cc version is a pleasant, paletable, bland version of my favourite song ever recorded - perfect for a generation that forms its musical tastes purely on what commercial crap is fed to them each week by the likes of MTV. the cc version sold a lot of records, made a lot of cash for the record company and every other major corporation involved in its manufacture. do you honestly think that cc gives a flying fuck about the lyrics/beauty/emotion of the track? for this reason alone, the joni version beats the cc version hands down. no question.

Jason, if it wasnt for the original...counting crows wouldnt be shitting anywhere!!! That goes for most of these remade versions of today...cant the next generation think of their own songs, and if they do, they have swear words in them. Love this version.

first i have heard a version of Amy Grant and i liked that. Then i heard Counting Crows, didn't know which one was first but i like that even more. Maybe cos it is sung by a man and i can understand it better.
Anyway, Joni says that her old man is leaving. But from the words i couldn't guess. Did she screw that relationship or her man was that stupid and gave it all away with no particular reason. How do you people think?
