Walk On the Ocean Lyrics

Send "Walk On the Ocean" Ringtone to your Cell

we spotted the ocean at the head of the trail
where are we going, so far away
and somebody told me that this is the place
where everything's better, everything's safe
walk on the ocean
step on the stones
flesh becomes water
wood becomes bone
and half and hour later we packed up our things
we said we'd send letters and all those little things
and they knew we were lying but they smiled just the same
it seemed they'd already forgotten we'd came

now we're back at the homestead
where the air makes you choke
and people don't know you
and trust is a joke
we don't even have pictures
just memories to hold
that grow sweeter each season
as we slowly grow old

Forget the song, I just want to know where "Toad the Wet Sprocket" came from. Without question one of the weirdest band names I have ever heard.

Then there's the Biblical refernece to Jesus walking on water in the song title. I think it's about calming down and clearing out your soul. I always think of walking through a big redwood forest and coming out on a cliff overlooking the ocean when I hear this song, it's very soothing to me.

I don't think this is about Vietnam. Glenn Phillips is not very political in the songs he writes. (That is right, John Mayer may have covered this tune, but Glenn and Toad the Wet Sprocket were the originals-although the Nickel Creek version is darn good.) I think he deals much more with the connections we make and miss with each other. My take on this song is a few people really coming together for a while and then letting every day life pull them back apart.

well, I don't usually voice my opinion on what I think a song means, but to me, this has nothing to do with vets. I mean, yeah, it could be taken that way, but to me this is talking about these people who find a place inside eachother that lets them escape and forget the world around them. They feel a sort of calm (water is usually associated with calm feelings) and relaxed. I don't know if that's what they ment, sorry if its not. But that's how I see it and that's what I understand and feel. So there :P

yeah a lot of people do think that its by john meyer, but i must say, i like the original by toad the wet sprocket better. although the cover with nickle creek was really good...
about the vietnam vets... yeah idk. i mean i sorta thought that too but than the rest doenst really fit, like "said we'd send letter and all of those little things" and than the chorus, i dont think even if you tried you could make that fit into the vet theme you know?
a lot of their songs are kina confusing... like what the hell is this about?! like 'is it for me' i haven't a clue...
in any case toad rocks, even now when he's gone solo.

I always thought this song was about Vietnam vets
because of the obvious war references and the lines "back at he homestead.....people don't know you,and trust is a joke" reminded me how bad some of the drafted vets were treated once they returned.

A lot of people think this song is by John Mayer because he has covered it several times, and once with Nickel Creek. :)

Does anyone know where to download this song as an mp3?
Anonymous 27/01/2003 00:15:32
Yeah, I know... did this guy ever *open* for John Mayer? That could be it.
Anonymous 17/01/2003 22:53:26
The hilarious thing is that people think this song is by John Mayer... They can't HEAR how different the voice is. Look on Kazaa and look up this song
