SCARBOROUGH FAIR / CANTICLE Lyrics

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsely, sage, rosemary, & thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Well, almost three years after he asked: I'm 25, so while older than you (and you're probably 16 now, haha hope my answer is worth the wait) still way to young to have followed this stuff while it was coming out, so part of a new generation of fans.

yeah, paul simon added the canticle part. It's derived largely from a protest song called This Side of the Hill on his early Songbook album.

ok, i wanna know, even if i probably wont get ne responses for ages... is this a new gen of s+g listeners, or the folks who got it when they first came out? im thirteen, and my older bro and mom introduced it to me via my mom's old vinyl records... she has about five copies of each of their albums. :)

but you are right about the fine needlework...

well...seeing as battalion fits the song, is in the given lyrics on the Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme cover, and sounds like what they say, along w/ the fact that dartallion isn't a word, i'd have to say that it is battallion

I have always loved this song since I first heard it. Then when I looked at the lyrics and got its full meaning, I thought it was even cooler! Oh and by the way, it is battalion not dartallion. :)

It is nor needle work. ijust heard the song on yahoo's launch.com

I'm pretty sure that the line regarding the shirt refers to "fine" needlework. Also, is it "battalion" or "Dartallion"? Not sure about that. Hope this helps.

this is the most complete lyric that sings the song with a war theme. it is my opinion that paul simon added the war theme to the song single-handedly. therefore this is probably the most complete SIMON and garfunkel lyric.

this is a site with a much better lyric (better meaning complete and original).

i am about to click Contact Leo and inform him that this song is listed 7 or more times in his search engine, and none refer to the original english folk song. it is a timeless classic with no known author, therefore it will be "covered" by many artists through time. his site doesnt handle this kind of song very well.

clean it up, Leo! if it was perfect, you could charge for membership!

(WARNING: This will sound like screeching until you are used to the noises characteristic of this type of metal. They do have unversal appeal though! Get acoustic versions if you don't believe me...still don't believe? Transcribe the guitar tab to piano notes and play it (if you have enough skill with a keyboard). Still not convinced? Tell me all about your favorite style of music, give me examples, give me a month to prepare, and I will produce a low-quality mp3 of ANY of these songs (yeah, even root...oh boy...) in YOUR favorite style of music. END WARNING)

The best lyrics and most complete that I've read for this song, better than the guitar book!
