I think you're missing the point. She doesn't want him anymore because he's paralyzed. The Vietnam War changed this man completely, physically, mentally, emotionally (I think that's what the writer- Mel Tillis- is trying to convey in the line about putting her in the ground). This woman couldn't accept it. Ask yourself, why do you love the person you love? Would you love them unconditionally?

Love the song; HOWEVER, it's scary to think that a man feels that if a woman no longer wants to be with him, he feels he must "put her in the ground". Learn to let go!
