Richard Cory Lyrics

Send "Richard Cory" Ringtone to your Cell

They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town,
With political connections to spread his wealth around.
Born into society, a banker's only child,
He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes:
Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show.
And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht!
Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch,
And they were grateful for his patronage and thanked him very much,
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read:
"Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head."

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

Apparently neither Paul nor Art like this song...Paul said in a recent radio interview that "even the poem doesn't really stand up to my scrutiny, and the song is not nearly as good as the poem." He said most of his early songs were "just past juvenalia", but the length of time that's passed since their release has given them a power that they didn't have before (or something to that effect). Go figure. Anyway, "Richard Cory" is not one of his best, but it's funky, and I enjoy it, so good on ya, Paulie.

actually, in one cd, i think it was a concert at carnegie hall in 1957 (or something close to that), garfunkel says, (this is paraphrased)"now here's a song we did from a poem that i once had to study in junior high school"

Yeah, the song is based on the poem, but in my opinion, the song's better :D

This appears to be based on the poem "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson. I noticed this after I had to write about the poem for school and then listened to the song ;)
