Maxwell's Silver Hammer Lyrics
Send "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" Ringtone to your Cell
Joan was quizzical, studied metaphysical
Science in the home
Late nights all alone with a test-tube
Ohh-oh-oh-oh...
Maxwell Edison majoring in medicine
Calls her on the phone
"Can I take you out to the pictures
Joa-oa-oa-oan?"
But as she's getting ready to go
A knock comes on the door...
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead
Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again
Teacher gets annoyed
Wishing to avoid an unpleasant sce-e-e-ene
She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away
So he waits behind
Writing 50 times "I must not be so-o-o-oo..."
But when she turns her back on the boy
He creeps up from behind
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead
B.C. Thirty-One said "we caught a dirty one"
Maxwell stands alone
Painting testimonial pictures ohh-oh-oh-oh
Rose and Valerie screaming from the gallery
Say he must go free (Maxwell must go free)
The judge does not agree and he tells them so-o-o-oo
But as the words are leaving his lips
A noise comes from behind
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon his head
Bang, Bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead

<font size=1><center>I love this song. I was never really into the Veatles, but my younger sister got into them majorly. So I natuarlly heard more and more of them. This is one of the few songs I adore. Also I think that anybody can have their own take on it. I personally have a different opinion then some who have posted. But I think its awesome to read everyone's ideas.
FYI: I , and probably alot of people like, don't care how old or young you are. Age doesn't really make that big a difference when it comes to music. I'm young but I'm not making a big deal out of it.

when i first heard this song on abby road it made me laugh. John lennon, even in college, always made his best from what others called unusual

I love how eveyone who posted has to glorify hw young they are. It's really super but no one cares.
I thik the person below me makes lid points but i agree more with the previous statements. I offer a quote refering to this song.
"This epitomises the downfall in life. Just when everything is going smoothly, 'bang bang' down comes Maxwell's silver hammer and ruins everything." - Paul
You guys should pick up the beatles illustrated lyrics book, its awesome.

Although I can see where Polarcap is coming from, and although i can verify that it is true, i offer a different explanation. this is not a narrative, you can tell because he is majoring in medicine one day and the next he is in elementary school. this is a big clue telling you this is not just a narrative. joan majoring in pataphysics is a joke because she has a test tube. pataphyiscs is imaginary, a test tube is reality. the silver hammer signifies wealth (silver spoon type of thing) along with the fact that he is majoring in medicine (gonna b a doctor some day). because the beatles are singing this song, lets assume that maxwell is british. it was a common practice of noble britians (meaning they are rich) to screw around with their own family members to keep their noble blood pure. this would result in, you guessed it, inbred children. these children where born with serious mental and physical defects. maxwell is one of these children, and so goes aorund hitting people in the head with his silver hammer. what the beatles are trying to say is that rich people can get out of punishments. maxwell, being rich, gets rid of his problems by using his silver hammer (wealth). i think that this is what the beatles r trying to say, but any answer is a legit one, except for it being the literal meaning of what they r saying in the song. peace out. this comment posted by a 14 year old boy

I love these lyrics! I heard the song here
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/239712
and can't stop listing to it. Of curse the music video that goes along with it is funny as well. I like the little background about the song at the end.
The guy that made the vid said their could be some deeper meaning to the lyrics, and I'm guessing that's what was posting about the name and the significance of the 'silver hammer'.
Great song, I love The Beatles in all their glory!

I can verify what Polarcap said. As to how he knows that, I can't say, but I can assume that it's in a similar way as to how I know it--which is simply that it's knowledge I've picked up during my the course of my life. Thomas Edison and James Clerk Maxwell are both very famous scientists, and the practices of the Camerlengo are well-documented and spoken about in a variety of very elementary texts. By the way, the "course of my life" isn't that long either. I'm only 18.

Mike

I love that this song is so chipper and up-beat when really there are murders happening in the lyrics ... the contrast is quite amusing and gives the song a certain something ...

This song I believe is more of a riddle than a killer's story.
First the name Maxwell Edison.
Maxwell- James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) (Scottish physicist)
"Maxwell was the greatest theoretical physicist of the nineteenth century… Einstein’s work on relativity was founded directly upon Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory"
Edison- Thomas Edison (1847 - 1931)
Invented the Phonograph/motion picture(Kinetoscope)and improved the light bulb. Obvious reference in the line "Can I take you to the pictures?"
His weapon was a Silver Hammer
The Camerlengo (the title of certain papal officials) officially pronounces the pope dead by tapping his head three times with a special hammer and calling his name; if there is no response the death is announced. The Hammer used was made of Silver. An ancient practice that is not used today.
So Maxwell Edison was the man of the future.
His Silver Hammer he used was to tell fraudelent science (pataphysics-the most absurd of the sciences), religion (teacher(50/pentecost)), and man's law that has existed until now based on the prior two orders are dead.

BTW, I now have the book "The Complete Beatles Lyrics", and so I can tell you the following:
1) it's "pataphysical", not "metaphysical".
What is that? According to the Chambers dictionary, pataphysics is "the science of imaginary solutions" invented by the French dramatist Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), writer of symbolic farce, from which is descended the theatre of the absurd.
2) It's definitely "P.C. thirty-one".

1) Paul cracks up because it's so silly, being "punished" by writing stuff 50 times when you're not a little kid any more
2) I think it _is_ "P.C." Thirty-one, as in Police Constable. Not sure, but I do think so. Anyone got a definitive source?

two things to say, first, your comments all suck, i mean seriosly, you'de think that the people who acctually are mentally capable of listening to the beatles would be able to write legitimate comments, but no, apparently not. personally i find the song funny, interesting, and very catchy. i am surprised people do not listen to the beatles more, for in my opinion, at least you can understand what they are saying, and it seems that they acctually put time and effort into the lyrics. yes, that is all for now. ..by the way, to all you previose comment posters, i will have you know that i am 15, and already have a vocabulary at least 3 times the size of yours. good-day to you all.

Kind of weird. But gives equal justice to both sexes. Fairer than the DV song --Run for Your Life (little girl).
