(Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd into Submission)

I been Norman Mailered, Maxwell Taylored.
I been John O'Hara'd, McNamara'd.
I been Rolling Stoned and Beatled till I'm blind.
I been Ayn Randed, nearly branded
Communist, 'cause I'm left-handed.
That's the hand I use, well, never mind!

I been Phil Spectored, resurrected.
I been Lou Adlered, Barry Sadlered.
Well, I paid all the dues I want to pay.
And I learned the truth from Lenny Bruce,
And all my wealth won't buy me health,
So I smoke a pint of tea a day.

I knew a man, his brain was so small,
He couldn't think of nothing at all.
He's not the same as you and me.
He doesn't dig poetry. He's so unhip that
When you say Dylan, he thinks you're talking about Dylan Thomas,
Whoever he was.
The man ain't got no culture,
But it's alright, ma,
Everybody must get stoned.

I been Mick Jaggered, silver daggered.
Andy Warhol, won't you please come home?
I been mothered, fathered, aunt and uncled,
Been Roy Haleed and Art Garfunkeled.
I just discovered somebody's tapped my phone.

Robert McNamara was Sec Def under Kennedy & Johnson.

Barry Sadler was a Green Beret and wrote a song called "The Ballad of the Green Berets" in the mid-60s.

Lou Adler was a pop music manager and song writer. Some of his artists were the Mamas and the Papas, Jan & Dean, and Carole King.

Maxwell Taylor is referred to as "Kennedy's favorite general". He was a US Ambassador to Vietnam. Authoritarian and insensitive, he wasn't popular with the locals.

Roy Halee was the engineer/producer who recorded all the Simon & Garfunkel albums, as well as Lovin' Spoonful & BS&T.

Same message...maybe you can read this one!!Hi out there. I'm wondering if anyone out there shares my enthusiasm for the music of Simon and Garfunkel...I am having trouble with this song, as I do not know much about these people! Here's what I know: Desultory means sort of jumping from place to place without a real purpose. Philippic means a few things but I think in this context they mean "a speech of violent denunciation" with harsh and often insulting language. Norman Mailer is an author. John O'Hara is also an author, he wrote novels and short stories, some of his works are regarded highly in American literature. Ayn Rand is an author/philosopher from Russia who moved to USA, she wrote "the fountainhead" among many other books. Phil Spector is "mr. motown" he was a big name in the business. Lenny Bruce was a comedian in the 50's and 60's I think. Mick Jagger, well, most people know him, but if not he was the singer for the Rolling Stones. Andy Warhol, another big one, was an artist.
I don't know Maxwell Taylor, Robert McNamara, Lou Alder, Barry Sadler or Roy Hale.
whew...If anyone is interested in helping out or correcting me I'd love to hear it!
