It's been had that this song is about abortion, that's rather obvious...
but the real depth of the song comes from the guilt of his conscience.
Anyone can write a song about abortion, but no one can willingly make public admissions to having one in such a way....

This is such a incredible song! After listening to this one song, I fell in love with Ben Folds Five. I now have all their CD's. They are quite possibly my favorite band. The songs so beautiful and sad at the same time. You can sort of tell what he's thinking.

when I was going through an abortion experience similar to the one Ben Folds described in 'Brick' this particular song meant the world to me. I know everyone has different emotions when getting an abortion and personally I felt like I could really relate to this song. It sounded exactly like how I was feeling only from the girls point of view. This song wasn't meant to portray the feelings that everyone feels when faced with the prospect of abortion it's just meant to be his. Just 'cause someone felt totally different during an abortion experience doesn't mean he had to feel the same way as them.
I didn't realize that anyone could interpret this song as anything other than being about an abortion until I had a discussion with a friend of mine who thought it was about the end of a relationship. I asked a few more people what they thought and some of them agreed with her. Finally I asked a friend of mine who is a huge Ben Folds fan and she brought me into her room and played her live Ben Folds cd and before he sang 'Brick' he explained that it was about his girlfriend in high school that got pregnant and he tried to make it sound like he didn't lean right or left on the issue of abortion. it's a really good cd, by the way. if you get the chance you should to listen to it.

the quality of the song definitely overrides the meaning of the song (whatever it may be). the background is tasteful and beautiful and the singer is very calming. Just a perfect song.

This song has been playing non-stop in my head all week.
i've read a lot of interpretations here and most seem to lean towards abortion. I, however, am a firm believer that songs can have many different meangins, it just depends on the person and their P.O.V. Personally, i think it's about a sour relationship that is detirorating and the girl has become overly obsessed with the guy and is weighing him down.

Call me crazy, but I think Whatever and Ever Amen has an overall theme to it. I think the theme is a guy who is grown up now, thinking back to his years of high school in possibly a small town setting where everyone is on a first name basis. Each individual song is a peice of what he goes through.
In "One Angry Dwarf", Ben is telling the people who picked on him in the earlier years of his life to fuck off and makes it apparent that he is more succesful than they ever will be. With this song he goes back down memory lane into relationships and experiences hes had in the past.
"Fair" goes from a 3rd person song to Bens point of view and i think is about a kind of lost relationship but how much he still longed for the female subject.
"Brick" has been commented on many times and is the largest subject of contreversy. I believe the more popular of the two notions, that Ben was in a relationship where he got a girl pregnant, she got an abortion and the relationship felt shallow and lonely afterwards.
"Song For the Dumped" Is a raging hormonal breakup song. Pretty straightforward.
"Selfless cold and composed" Is another song which sounds like it was written right after a breakup fight where dishes were broken, but is a lot more somber than the preivous song. He sounds meek and lonesome by the end of the song, like that most of his relationships just aren't working out.
"Kate" is about the euphoria a guy gets when he meets basically the perfect girl, and the girl Kate may have been the female subject he talks about in songs, as their relationship progresses.(Selfless cold and composed, song for the dumped, brick, fair)
"Smoke" might be about a shared journal between two people, revealing deep secrets, that was thrown away by both of the writers. (A personal favorite)
"Cigarette" follows "Smoke" and this song is the jaunty piece of the puzzle. This song is in 3rd person about a man named Fred Jones who is married to a crazy, drug addicted woman. This song does not make too much sense to the rest of the album, but is a beautifully composed song at that.
"Steven's Last Night in Town" sounds like a song about an exchange student or a foreign visitor who has indefinetly overstayed his welcome. The 1st person subject, Ben, seems stymied at Steven's actions and wants him to leave.
"Battle of Who Could Care Less" sounds like a song about the afforementioned "Kate". It is about a girl who just kind of stays home and slumps about all day. Ben does not get why she thinks its cool to be so bored.
"Missing the War" sounds like another song about his abortion with his girlfriend. I thought this because of lyrics like "She's sleeping like a baby, she doesn't like a baby." and "It's really no big deal, it happens all the time" As if he is trying to downplay the whole fiasco with inner denial.
"Evaporated" brings us back to the grown up Ben, and how being an adult is confusing and tiring, and it kind of sounds like he is losing hope with life.
I would love some feedback from this.

Sorry for bringing this back up but said by Ben Folds -
"I feel pretty good about that one, cuz I feel like it was pretty responsible. Like it was a true story, it was something at the time I wasn’t as comfortably with talking about. But hell, probably a couple of million people have heard it now. But, yeah, in high school me and my girlfriend had to have an abortion, or she had to have the abortion, but I had to go through it with her, and, so that’s what the song was about. And when I wrote the song - and Darren helped me write it - when I wrote the song, I was really conscious of not being sensational with it, and not taking it to the point that it was an issue song or trying to push the buttons too hard, just try to say, "Okay, here’s what I felt about it, and here’s what it feels like". If the song is a little bit sad to you, you can multiply that times a hundred that’s what it’s really like."

I am not trying to put down anyones opinion of the song, but if it was about aids then why would he say "there not home to find us out" when he obviously isnt going to the "doctor" either. Both of them would have been going if he was nervous about them finding out. I think that everyone is looking for a deeper meaning of the story then there actually is. Of course this song is beautiful and evokes more emotion than I'm sure was originally though, but I think it's pretty clear that the actual plot behind the song is that he got his girlfriend pregnant, and they went to get the abortion, hes nervous about it and buys her flowers, and now shes regretting it hence why she says "it's not me you're dying for" so I'm assuming that he wanted her to get an abortion, not technically her...so...yeah think about it

everybody seems to have different opinions on this song and if this keeps up then u people will start fighting like a chat room or something.
Ya know-
"It's about abortion!"
"No it's not!"
"Yes it is!"
"I've seen him in concert and he told me it wasn't!"
"You're a lying b*tch, I've seen him on TV and he said it was!"
"Watch who you're calling a b*tch, you stupid a** mother f*cker!"
And so on.
So, once again, it will be up to me to be peacemaker.
But I'm hoping it won't go there.
The point is it is a wonderful song.
So mournful.
