Your body may be gone. I'm gonna carry you in, In my head, in my heart, in my soul. And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again. Well I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, Don't think so. Well that is that and this is this. You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get. You get away from me. You get away from me. Collected my belongings and I left the jail. Well thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell. I had to think awhile. I had to think awhile. The ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in? In your head, in your mouth, in your soul. And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both gros old. Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I hope so. Well that is that and this is this. WIll you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed, when the ocean met the sky. You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye. When the earth folded in on itself and said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath." You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death? You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death? The ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in? In your head, in your mouth, in your soul. The more we move ahead the more we're stuck in rewind. Well I don't mind. I don't mind. How the hell could I mind? Well that is that and this is this. You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get. You get away from me. You get away from me. Well that is that and this is this. You tell me what you saw and I'll tell you waht you missed, when the ocean met the sky. You wasted life, why woulndt you waste the afterlife?

I like the lyrics, "For your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there/But I wouldn't hold my breath. You wasted life, why won't you waste death?"
In my mind this refers to very religious people who believe strongly in literal reward or punishment for their earthly life in the "next world." I immedietly thought of groups like the puritans or the amish (not a widespread religion anymore, I know, and I believe Puritans are all but gone), who walked on eggshells their entire lives, always taking pains to not step out of favor with "God" in that they might escape eternal damnation. I guess this could be a way of wasting one's life, in that you never fully lived life to the fullest, you always lived it in fear. All the time you're alive you're counting on a wonderful afterlife to make up for this crappy existence, but the narrator seems to be challenging the listener and asking, "How can you be certain that the afterlife will be nothing, or worse than this liffe? How do you know there will even be an afterlife at all? It's better to just live while you're alive (ah, Bon Jovi).
The religious context is one way to see the song through (or maybe just those few lines), but I think you can see it also in more general terms, like maybe heaven and hell are just abstract notions someone has in his mind about his future. He thinks, if I'm good, I'll have success, if I'm bad, I'll have failure ("hell"). Maybe the song is just pointing out that we shouldn't rely on such distant and abstract notions such as eternal life or damnation and/or imminent success or failure.
You wasted life, why won't you waste the afterlife?
I think the last line is really startling. Instead of the word "death", it catches the listener off-guard with a new end to the phrase we heard earlier. After life has more syllablles and has consonants that make it stand out and jar against our ears. We often hear of people "wasting" their lives, but rarely is the same concept applied to death or the afterlife. It turns on its head the entire notion of the afterlife, saying that perhaps there is nothing out there and we just have to do what we can when we can. "This is it."
Sorry to be such a nerd. Anyway, that's only one tiny part of the song. kudos to Modest Mouse and what not.

Also, for future notice:
When you post lyrics on this site, try to space out the stanzas. Its not really important, but it's much nicer to read.

"Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath. You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?"
-Great line. Amazing song.
It's weird, I really did not enjoy Modest Mouse the first time I heard them, but they gradually grew on me.

Well, what is there to say about it? Everything about Ocean Breathes Salty is addictive; I catch myself humming the guitar line, the bass line, singing the words, bouncing my foot to the drums. I was also very fond of Isaac's abrupt endings to his lyrics.

Reggae_Fan, you are a moron. Just because you know the word "rudiment" doesn't mean that you know shit about drumming. I don't know what you consider "straight" feels, but rock is about as straight as it gets. Maybe his drumming style is boring because you can't play it. Who knows? Also, people don't write percussion parts for bands, the drummer makes it up. If you think that being a drum instructor means you know about drums then you need to get your facts straight. Personally, I think the drummer for Modest Mouse is pretty good and he plays parts that fit the music. He's not anything extraordinary, but he gets the job done. And don't bullshit about drums, BITCH!

Whoa whoa, whatever happened to there being a such thing as different styles of music? If straight drums fit the music, so be it. If you don't like it, don't listen to it.

awww c'mon Reggae Fan. You no doubt heard that float on song. the drums and the snare and all that shit was tight. May hap this song wasn't carribean enough for you, but if you think about it, the drums in reggae is completely simple but groovy. All that talk about rudiment, please Bitch.

Dear Questionmark18,
Can you do me a favor? Tell your brother's friend, the one who plays drums, that his stlye is very.....boring. Not that he sucks as a drummer, it's just he plays nothing but "strait" feels. Even when the music opens for a "rock" feel, he continues a simple pattern, or "rudiment", if you will. Though, it might be because he just started drumming or that's the effect they are trying to pull off. (In which case, the person who writes the percussion music for the band needs to update his work.) Other than that, I really like this band.....Though, the lyrics are a bit to catch unless you hear the song a few times.

Moest Mouse is incredible
wow
just the name is kinda deep
in a world where people are trying to be "mighty" this band is happy to be modest.
maybe that's not deep
I dunno
who cares this song is amazing
