YOU OUGHT TO BE WITH ME
Al Green
(A. Green, W. Mitchell, A. Jackson)

Sit right down and talk to me,
about how you want to be,
you ought to be with me,
ya, you ought to be with me.

Thinking about what people do,
talking about how I love you,
thinking there's nothing to what they say,
you ought to be with me, anyway.

They don't want to see us do,
all of the dumb things we want to,
you ought to be with me,
hey, you ought to be with me.

You don't have to waste my time,
if you want to be a friend of mine,
you can be denied and walk away,
and turn your back for another day.

You ought to be the kind of girl,
that can brighten up this old world,
and it's hard to see why you and me,
can't be together happily.

I'm trying to realize,
you being with some other guy,
I don't know the reason why,
you ought to be with me until I die.

(you ought to be with me until I die)

I don't want to waste my time,
if you want to be a friend of mine,
I want to hold you tight, love you right,
put good feelin' in your night.

Al Green's amazing hit streak continued with the chart-topping "You Oughta Be With Me." By then, the singer and his songwriting partners — producer Willie Mitchell and Stax musician/ Booker T. and the MGs member Al Jackson — had their sound down pat: a soft, gospel-infused soul sound with accenting horns and "crying" strings that all seemed to float along the buoyant, syncopated rhythms supplied by drummer Jackson. Following the million-sellers "Let's Stay Together" and "Look What You've Done for Me," "You Oughta Be With Me" brought forth from some the criticism that Green seemed to be making the same record over. Mitchell responded that the Green sound sells records, and besides, a key ingredient of that sound was having great songs. His assessment was bared out by the number of gold and platinum record awards the singer had on his wall. Lost in the discussion was the fact that Green was continuing the legacy of the late Otis Redding. Like Redding, Green recorded in Memphis and used the same horn section ( the Memphis Horns) and the same drummer ( Jackson) heard on the hits issued on Stax's Volt imprint by the singer best known for the gold R&B/ pop chart-topping classic "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay." "You Oughta Be With Me" went to number one R&B and number three pop in late 1972.
