Now that you're here with me,
I want to keep you free,
to do the things that you want to do,
the joy in life is loving you,
but now the day has come,
to let you know where I'm coming from,
the best of my years will go to you,
it's the only thing that I can do,
but these things don't come overnight,
lovin' you baby, I think I'm right.
Let me say before I forget,
lovin' you baby, it's where it's at,
ya baby, look what you done for me,
ya baby, you set my heart free,
oh but I feel, ya...
Sometimes I wanna leave, but then I say,
it wouldn't make sense at all,
anyway, forgive me baby,
if I do wrong,
I haven't been a true man for so long,
let be say before I forget,
lovin' you baby, it's where it's at,
ya baby, look what you done for me,
ya baby, you set my heart free,
baby, do you wanna, do the thing that you oughta,
you've been very good for me,
and that's a fact, I say,
ya baby, look what you done for me,
ya baby, you set my heart free,
oh, no matter, baby...
what you done for me...
I got the feelin' that it's gonna...
ya, look what you done for me..

Al Green's work with Willie Mitchell has a way of retaining its freshness and may leave a listener amazed. This 1972 hit is no exception. As "Let's Stay Together" was still on the charts, I'm Still in Love With You was released. "Look What You've Done for Me" was the first single from the album. Compared to his other work of the time, this sounds a little different. While their work together was often a mix of R&B, country, and pop, by this time Green's sound was becoming its own subgenre. As well as sonic values, "Look What You've Done for Me" continued Green's streak as one of the most intelligent sex symbols in music. This track, for better or worse, features Green as more capricious than one would hope a romantic icon would be. After proclaiming his devotion in the most roundabout manner possible, he sings, "Sometimes I wanna leave." He later decides to stay. As "Let's Stay Together" had its precise, unabashed love, the big compliment here is Green singing, "Loving you baby, is where it's at." It's enough. Musically "Look What You've Done for Me" is a gorgeous song. The subtle string arrangements by James Mitchell and Charles Chalmers are juxtaposed to a tough horn chart. It is that dichotomy that helps this track stand out. Like "Tired of Being Alone," Green wrote this track alone and it taps into his persona a little closer than most of his 1971-1973 singles.
