I love to listen to this song when I am driving because of the great music video. Makes me want to kick it up a gear.
"You gave me life, now show me how to live!"

Wow... Maybe psychofrnk is right, because when you read the lyrics literally, it really does sound like it's about frankenstein. :) It's like in the Soundgarden song "Like Suicide". I was confused about some of the lyrics, cuz they didn't all fit into any one idea that I had of what it could be about. Then I read that it was about a bird that flew into Chris' window and broke its neck. He smashed its head in with a brick to end its pain. When you read the lyrics literally, its pretty obvious that the song is about that, but we all just look at lyrics sometimes like they have to have a deep meaning. Sometimes they do, sometimes not. :)

Religious or not.. his lyrics seem to be the "one size fits all" kind. The religious listener takes the words at face value, and the non-religious sees the irony.

Awesome song, as far as all of the debates about the religious overtones in Cornell's lyrics, I personally believe that the man is conveying expressions of agnosticism (for lack of a better term). I don't think that it's God that the fellow has a problem with, it's the dogma and fanatacism that many religious sects (Christianity possibly foremost) tend to try to force down the gullets of the rest of humanity. I try not to over-rationalize each lyric because sometimes people add words to songs that just sound good (imagine that). I don't know Chris in real life so I don't pretend to understand his beliefs or his motives nor would I probably if he was my best friend, or brother. We put labels on people (Atheist, Religious, or even Agnostic) because it's easier to define than all of the intracacies that make up a person. Can an Atheist not love someone??, Can a Religious person not kill??, Can an Agnostic not have spiritual thoughts?? As for this song , when I listen to it I hear a man asking his God : "Hey, if you really are there, and I do have a purpose , tell me what IT is!" You gave me life, now what am I suppose to do with it.......of course it COULD be about Frankenstein ;-)
btw ...if it matters the version of this song that I have sounds like he says:
Hey, Hey, I said
Near as I can figure out
You gave me life
Now show me how to live
pretty sure it's the demo version

Actually Rue, its not as religious as you may think. Read Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and then come back and think about what this song is based off of.

Have u heard the start of this song? IT TOTALLY ROX!! and the rest of the song is no different. Cornell puts serious ideas of death and unhappyness onto paper and turns it into a fantastic song that gives Audioslave the rite to be THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!!!!
