Copacabana (At the Copa)
-Artist: Barry Manilow as sung on "Greatest Hits" -Arista A2L 8601 -peak Billboard position # 8 in 1978 -Words and Music by Barry Manilow, Bruce Sussman, and J. Feldman
<Latin percussion and strings>
Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there She would merengue and do the cha-cha And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar Across a crowded floor, they worked from 8 till 4 They were young and they had each other Who could ask for more?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana) The hottest spot north of Havana (here) At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the Copa....they fell in love
(Copa Copacabana)
His name was Rico, he wore a diamond He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancin' there And when she finished, he called her over But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two There was blood and a single gun shot But just who shot who?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana) The hottest spot north of Havana (here) At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the Copa....she lost her love
(Copa. . Copacabana) (Copa Copacabana) (Copacabana, ahh ahh ahh ahh) (Ahh ahh ahh ahh Copa Copacabana) (Talking Havana have a banana) (Music and passion...always the fash--shun)
<Latin percussion interlude>
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show Now it's a disco, but not for Lola Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind She lost her youth and she lost her Tony Now she's lost her mind!
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana) The hottest spot north of Havana (here) At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the Copa....don't fall in love
(Copa) don't fall in love Copacabana Copacabana
etc. to end

This song always reminds me of one of those old Rat Pack movies -- which is odd, since I loathe them...
(Maybe I'd have liked them better if Frank Snot-ra wasn't in them... )

Well, I didn't think this many people liked this song. I listen to oldies on the radio, yes, love this song. It's uplifting and depressing at the same time....

Well, if anyone is as sad enough as me and is interested, I can now - I think - answer my own question as to when this is set...
I went to see 'Copacabana' - the muscial based on the song, and also written by Barry Manilow (no, I don't have a life... What is your point?) and it seemed more 50s style than 20s. I'll stop before I ramble on too much. Though I will recommend the show - it follows the plot of the song, but with a twist at the end, so don't think you know what happens, just because you know the song!
I also own the soundtrack now....

I'm on a bit of a Lola spree at the moment... I have a character at an RPG by that name, and so have been listening to Copacabana, Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets) and the song I got her name and this user name from... Come on someone, make my day....
Anyway, I love this song, in spite of having listened to it to a point that may be deemed 'overkill', though it is pretty depressing, as I don't like to think of my Lola losing her mind.
It's odd, I always get a mental picture of someone in 1920s gear... One of those fringed flappers' dresses, I think it's the 'feathers in her hair' line, 'cause of those headbands they always used to wear. But Cha cha is 50s dancing, no? Plus, if you look at the date of the song, the line 'but that was 30 years ago' would set it just at the end of the 40s. But it's not exactly 80s style... So if you want to argue that it IS the twenties (which I'm not sure why I do... Gun culture was big as well as wearing feathers?) then you could say he's trying to do a fifties style song which would mean it would set it in the twenties, 'cause that's when '30 years ago' would have been, or maybe I'm reading too much into it all and should learn more about different eras of dress, dance and music before I embarrass myself...
Anyway, if anyone else knows other Lola songs, let me know! I'd also be interested in talking to not_lola if you're still reading this... TV Lolas are cool too. Any Lolas are good - I collect them.

this song reflects the reality… it is a good advice “don’t fall in love”
love is one big disappointment
in the song a woman "lola" suffered from it, but in the reality men are the victims

Hi there!!, well, Im 16 yers old and Im from Puerto Rico (USA), the point is that Copacabana is a nightclub located in the north of Havana, Cuba. Havana is the capital of Cuba and Copacabana was the hottest point in the caribbean, specialy, in Cuaba from the 50's to 80's were the mafia used to go. This nightclub still there but have not a lot of visitants since 10 years ago cause of the Fidel regime.

Okay, so I'm obsessed - a google search revealed many Copacabana clubs.
Quick thought - if this song isn't a true story about poor Lola and Toni, it probably stands to reason that the club is for pretend, too, huh?

Isn't there a club Copacabana in NYC?
And I don't know ~where~ I get this information, but didn't the farm family that housed Paris Hilton visit the Copacabana club on their visit to the Regis and Kelly show? And isn't that show filmed in NYC?

Copacabana IS in Cuba, "The hottest spot north of Havannah" Havannah is the capital city of Cuba. Hope this clears things up.

I am not 100% sure on this, but I always thought that Copacabana was in Cuba. That is my best guess.

Well, maybe nobody cares but I wonder where this "Copacabana" is supposed to be located. Obviously it has nothing to do with Brazil as the lyrics say "The hottest spot north of Havana". Maybe Miami?

This is one of the best songs in the world. These days people dont know how to write songs. I am only twelve years old and i am lovingthe old stuff. The whole sixties and seventies era. If u like this song, i recommend listening to Ragdoll by Aerosmith, its really good.

Catchy song! (I think Barry Manilow outdone himself with this one), as it is easily Barry's best! I also liked the Latin flavor of the song--it gave the song a uniqueness to it.

I love this song! It´s great for all times. How can one not dance and not think of love when listening to it? Lyrics are smart, and song is just PERFECT!

Its quite strange as i am only 16 years old, but i love this song to bits, after listening to this it gives me tingles and it always a great pickup after a derpressing day. This shows so much beautiful emotion in this song. I hail you Barry Manilow.
