I just downloaded the Winamp plugin and started going through some of my tracks to grab lyrics, but there's one huge bug (and a few small ones) which means I have to stop using it. The plugin seems to be grabbing song titles from the ID3v1 tag rather than the ID3v2 tag, which means there's a limit to how long the title tags it grabs are.

There's a nuisance factor there, since the search with an incomplete title won't automatically find the right match and you'll need to manually pick it.

But even worse, when it saves the lyrics to the ID3v2 tags, it overwrites all the existing ID3v2 tags with what it read from ID3v1. A bunch of my carefully tagged tracks that I added lyrics to are now messed up and truncated. That's not good.

Besides that, it freezes Winamp if I press a key when the lyrics window is active. While stepping through my tracks, if I need to do something in the lyrics window, I need to click in the main Winamp window to give it focus before pressing the key to go to the next track.

On top of that, the Alt-Z keyboard shortcut to show and hide the lyrics window also has the side effect of clearing the existing playlist.

Based on all of those issues after just 15-20 minutes of playing with it, I'm going to have to abandon this and see if I can't find something better. It's too bad, it seems pretty close to what I'm looking for, just way too damaging to my music collection to actually use.

Ok, now that I'm wasting a lot of time fixing the messed up tags, I'm realizing that the tag mangling is even worse than I thought. Even when the artist, title, and album fields are short enough to fit completely in ID3v1 tags, you still have cases where the ID3v2 tags used to have the full release date (e.g., 2009-08-18), which all got converted to ID3v1 year-only dates.

Just some warnings for anyone who's thinking of using the current version of this plugin.

I agree and 2nd this nomination. This is a horrendous bug. It's like a foot-long cockroach drooling slime and scratching fleas in the dirty corner. Fix this ASAP please!

On the other hand, guys, you can always save the data to text file in the mean-time. That way no id3-tag muss-ups occur. But id3-tag support is preferable imho.
